Can the HTC One M9 outperform the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhone 6 in a drop test?
4/16/2015 4:07:00 PM

Last week, we showed you a video that captured a drop test battle between the Apple iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6. Unlike most drop tests preserved on video, this one employed a professional drop test machine. If you recall, the Galaxy S6 completely died before the end of all of the testing, handing a victory to the iPhone 6. Despite outlasting Sammy's flagship, the iPhone 6 also was heavily damaged after the tests were run.

In a new video released today, it is the HTC One M9 that goes up against the professional drop testing machine. HTC's new flagship has that tank-in-a-hand feel ...

Samsung Push Service update may improve battery life on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge
4/16/2015 3:46:00 PM

While our tests showed that the Galaxy S6 edge offers excellent battery life, and the battery of the regular Galaxy S6 isn't too bad, either, some users are actually complaining about battery life on both handsets. If you're among them, you should be happy to find out that a recent app update from Samsung may improve things in this regard.

The app that we're talking about is Samsung Push Service. Available on most Galaxy smartphones, the application manages notifications from various Samsung services, including Samsung Apps, Samsung Wallet, Samsung Pay, Samsung Link, and others.

Pissed-off Legere starts second petition to abolish overages on rival carriers
4/16/2015 2:16:00 PM

T-Mobile CEO John Legere cannot bottle the anger he is feeling toward the competition and the overage charges they add to subscribers' monthly bills. Legere says that T-Mobile figured out that these mobile operators raked in $1 billion in overage charges in 2014. Calling these carriers "idiots," Legere has started his second petition on Change.org asking the competition to follow T-Mobile and abolish overage charges.

The petition has over 200,000 signatures so far, and is the most popular petition on the site. And to make things interesting, the executive says that when 250,000 signatures ...

4/16/2015 12:51:00 PM

Last week, we showed you a large collection of leaked LG G4 images including several that showed a leather back for the device. On LG's Facebook page this morning, the manufacturer posted a teaser that basically confirms that those leather backed pictures of the phone are legitimate. We also learned that the leather is vegetable-tanned. LG writes, "Always have authentic luxury in hand. The brand new LG G4 with vegetable-tanned leather cover. See the great, feel the great."

LG also posted a pair of promotional photos showing the unannounced handset in black and white. The device is expected ...

For some time now, there has been talk that this year, Apple will be introducing a large tablet for the enterprise and educational markets. With an expected 12.9-inch screen, the Apple iPad Pro/Plus would go up against Microsoft's successful Surface Pro 3. Prior leaks have revealed that this new iPad would offer four speakers and would support the use of an optional stylus that would be sold separately.

Believe it: Juniper Research forecasts $70 mil advertising spend by 2019 on... smartwatches?
4/16/2015 9:47:00 AM

If you are thinking that manufacturers are alone in trying to figure out wearable tech, you are forgetting another, kind of omnipresent player: the advertising industry.

Yep, you read that right – according to a new report from Juniper Research, advertising spend on smartwatches will reach nearly $70 million by 2019. That's small potatoes in the big scheme of things, but it does indicate that wearables aren't about to pass unnoticed by ad agencies, which, reportedly, have so far spent just $1.5 million on advertising to early adopters of the new form factor.

Sony to go metal with the Xperia Z4, embed touch fingerprint sensor in the power key
4/16/2015 8:33:00 AM

Word from the grapevine is that the Sony Xperia Z4 will feature not only a metal chassis, which we saw in the leaked frame comparison with the Z3 not long ago, but in fact an all-metal body, probably akin to the Huawei P8 that was just announced yesterday. Now, whether that means Sony will do away with the glass rear it pioneered for the Z-line, or do something similar to the Galaxy S6, remains to be seen, but it's the other nugget of info in this latest leak that caught our attention.

The Xperia Z4 is now claimed to introduce a fingerprint scanner, ...

Gramophone is a new music player for Android with a simplified purpose
4/16/2015 8:17:00 AM

If your stock phone music player is getting a bit long in the tooth, and you are a bit tired of all the options in the Play Store, a new entrant has popped up to remedy your pains.

The aptly named Gramophone bets on a clean, a bit washed interface, devoid of the myriad of options that, say, the ultrapopular PowerAmp throws at your unsuspecting, not-too-audiophile persona.

The app offers all the basics, though, save for genre categorization, and pulls artist info automatically, though no album art if you don't have it tagged and thrown into ...

Internal Apple memo says it all: No Watch to be found for sale in stores until June
4/16/2015 8:08:00 AM

It feels like rumors originating from the supply chain of any manufacturer are true only half the time, but in the case of the Apple Watch, they may have been onto something. Namely, it seems as if Apple is truly having trouble manufacturing enough of the wearable, and while pre-ordered units will start shipping at the end of next week, you can apparently wave goodbye to in-store sales of the thing until June. We have two, semi-officials reasons, to think that.

To start off, according to a leaked internal Apple memo issued by SVP of Retail and Online Sales, Angela ...

Five free, feature-rich alternatives to Gmail for Android
4/16/2015 8:00:00 AM

Most Android phones in Western markets come with at least two email clients - it's the stock email app, or Gmail. Usually, the stock email app is kind of simple and limited, while Gmail does Google's own email service best and forgets about the rest. Of course, there are many alternative apps on disposal, and some of them can be better, more elaborate, and - perhaps most importantly - can support multiple inboxes from different mail service providers without making a mess organizing all those messages. Others have gesture controls for faster, more efficient work. And others just look nicer.

4/16/2015 7:16:00 AM

Yesterday, we told you that the ZTE Nubia Z9 Max would be delayed a month due to some production issues. The ZTE Nubia Z9 mini has already had one successful flash sale. So that leaves the ZTE Nubia Z9 flagship, which was not unveiled back on March 26th like the other two phones were. According to a post put up today on the manufacturer's own Weibo page, the Nubia Z9 will be properly introduced to the world on May 6th.

We have seen leaked images before of the phone, which sports a bezel-less screen. The device has been characterized as being "stunning," carrying a 5.5-inch display with resolution ...

Samsung opens access to its new Theme store to designers, urges them to apply for a partnership
4/16/2015 6:51:00 AM

Judging by Samsung's and HTC's latest flagship devices, themes are the new fad with Android manufacturers. Indeed, both the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and the HTC One M9, come with a theme engine (and store) built into their respective proprietary spins on Android 5.0 Lollipop. But while neither camp is launching empty-handed, it is fair to say that they'll need to enlist the support of third-party developers in order for such a feature to really make sense and ensure that we end up being sorry for using the word fad at all.

Samsung is doing just that, at least judging by a new GalaxyThemeStore.com ...

Both phones are good looking, made of quality materials, and feature a remarkably fast hardware that ranks at the very top of all performance ratings. 4/16/2015 6:38:00 AM

In other words, the iPad Pro has been rumored so many times up to this point that we're not sure what to believe.

MediaTek could be rolling a 10-core chip off the assembly line by the end of 2015
4/15/2015 11:56:00 PM

MediaTek, the company whose chips have normally been seen in low-end budget models from China (until recently), was the first to offer a true octa-core chipset back in 2013. Now, a report out of China states that the chipmaker has displayed its next-gen product at a special event. Companies that showed up to take a gander included Xiaomi and Vivo.

According to a Chinese analyst, the new MediaTek Helio X20 chipset will be equipped with 10 cores, and is said to have produced an AnTuTu benchmark score above 70,000. The octa-core MT-6795 that is being used to drive the HTC One M9 Plus, has scored ...
