OnePlus 2 and a cheaper OnePlus smartphone should both be released this year

The OnePlus One is one of last year's most surprising smartphones: it came out of nowhere and reached sales of around 1 million units, despite the fact that it wasn't sold like most other handsets, customers requiring an invitation in order to purchase it. This year, OnePlus has way bigger plans: according to Bloomberg, which recently visited OnePlus' headquarters in Shenzhen, China, the company hopes to sell 3 to 5 million smartphones by the end of 2015, and 10 million in 2016.

Nokia in talks to buy mobile network equipment manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent

Nokia announced today that it is in advanced discussions with Alcatel-Lucent about an exchange offer that would result in Nokia's purchase of the mobile network equipment manufacturer. The two companies cautioned that no deal had been agreed to, and talks could break off without a transaction announced. French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron backs the deal, saying that he was reassured by Nokia about issues like job cuts and plant closings.

The hope is that by combining Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent's mobile network equipment business, the merged company can better compete with industry leader ...

 

US carriers are removing some of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge pre-loaded apps

When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge at MWC 2015, the company announced that it has reduced the number of apps that come pre-loaded the new TouchWiz version, while also promoting the inclusion of multiple productivity-oriented apps from Microsoft such as OneDrive, Skype, OneNote and Office Mobile.

According to a report issued by research firm IHS, a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge 64 GB (Verizon model) costs around $290 to build. This means the handset is more expensive to make than any of Apple's latest iPhones, which can cost up to $263 (iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB) to manufacture. The S6 edge is obviously also more expensive to build than a Galaxy S5 ($256).

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive component inside the Galaxy S6 edge is the curved Quad HD display: at $85 per unit (you can buy a decent, complete smartphone for that kind of money), the unique, dual-curve screen accounts for 29% of the ...
