4/20/2015 10:46:00 AM

Now that the cat is out of the bag about the rear camera on the upcoming LG G4, the manufacturer has decided to pull out all of the stops in promoting the 16MP snapper that adorns the back of its new flagship phone. This morning, LG has released a video that stars professional "landscape, travel and humanitarian photographer" Colby Brown, who goes through some of the new features to be found on the handset's new rear-facing camera.

Brown says that even a .1 difference in aperture can make a difference in how a camera handles light. He compares the f/1.8 aperture on the LG G4's rear camera ...

Three apps to install and use your big phone with one hand much easier
4/20/2015 9:48:00 AM

Look, Ma, one hand! Today's big screen smartphones present plenty of challenges towards one-handed operation, despite manufacturers increasingly offering interface features that facilitate one-handed operation. Samsung, as the one which popularized the phablet format, is paving the way here with one-hand, Pop-up view, and other modes.

Carrying groceries in one hand trying to answer a text with the other? Eating chicken fingers and trying to launch the ESPN app to see how the other games are advancing with your only clean palm?

What if your manufacturer ...

Would you buy the global equivalent of the Sony Xperia Z4?
4/20/2015 8:05:00 AM

At some point in the past few years, Sony decided internally that moving to a 6-month refresh cycle for their flagship Xperia line makes sense. That way, their flagship would always have best or near-best in class for every major internal component, and never have their devices temporarily under-powered compared to what their rivals have i nstore. Better yet, they could sell it to consumers as a fans-centric move – "We slave away so that you have the latest available at pretty much any point in time".

Not everyone necessarily likes this approach, but it's a fact that Sony ...

Sony Xperia Z4 specs review
4/20/2015 7:50:00 AM

The Sony Xperia Z4 has arrived! Or wait, isn't this the Sony Xperia Z3? They seem to look practically the same.

You can't argue that while there are some subtle differences, the Xperia Z4 is for the most part a look-alike, a copy of last year's Z3. Then, the Z3 was a copy of the Sony Xperia Z2, which was a bolder, but still very gradual evolution over the original Xperia Z.

And if those of you who found it disappointing that HTC is not evolving the looks of its One series quick enough with a third consecutive phone retaining largely the same design, then ...

Sony Xperia Z4 vs Xperia Z3: Should you upgrade?
4/20/2015 5:43:00 AM

With the Xperia Z1, Sony started realizing a new internal strategy that would go on to characterize its mobile business for years to come – flagship devices would be refreshed every 6 months and not the typical, 12-month cycle that its rivals observe. Company execs defended the move as one that benefits consumers – instead of passing on the newest and hottest hardware, that way Sony could keep you up to date and offer a competitive product at any point in time. That is, if you could afford two flagship purchases per year.

But Sony's mobile business hasn't been doing ...

Nokia staging a comeback: new phones could come in late 2016
4/20/2015 5:26:00 AM

Nokia now looks nothing like the gigantic phone maker Nokia we used to know. After Microsoft purchased the company, Nokia is basically divided in three divisions: its networking unit that is the most profitable and serious part of its current operations; then the Nokia maps division responsible for Here maps; and only then, finally, the Nokia device division.

So far, in its new and independent, post-Microsoft standing, Nokia as a device maker has only released one device: the Nokia N1 tablet. It's not surprising that there are no new phones released ...

4/20/2015 5:14:00 AM

The Popcorn Time video streaming service is so unique among the smorgasbord of such offerings, that Netflix itself listed it as a direct competitor in its quarterly report not long ago. Rightfully called "the Netflix for torrents," it goes above and beyond the extra mile with a rich and seamless interface that lets you stream thousands of movies and TV shows in the best quality available, and with subtitles in many languages at that.

Unlike other such services, Popcorn sports a built-in VPN for ensuring your privacy and anonymity, and is a playground for efficient streaming technologies, ...

Poll results: do innovations in the Huawei P8 justify its iPhone or Galaxy S level pricing?
4/20/2015 5:01:00 AM

Slowly but surely Huawei built its P-line of flagship handsets as a direct alternative to the more established iPhone and Galaxy S premium smartphone franchises. The P6, P7 and, now, the newly-announced P8, have all shipped with $500+ MSRPs, which is way above what the typical Chinese handset costs, even the flagship ones.

It is Apple that Huawei mimics with the strategy, rather than Samsung, as the Korean company usually stuffs its phones to the gills with the latest specs, while the team from Cupertino bets on a proven specs sheet that is a level below ...
