5 best benchmark apps and what they do (for Android, iPhone/iPad, and Windows phone)
4/23/2015 7:58:00 AM

Almost without exception, each and every product on the market today has gone through some type of manufacturer-approved benchmarks, and is then further tested by independent, third-party reviewing publications (or even committees) in order to produce some kind of rating for that item and have a basis for comparison. This is also true of smartphones, and especially as of late, as the popularity of benchmarking solutions has definitely increased.

You may wonder why that is. Perhaps the single most profound reason for that are the many improvements that the teams behind these tools ...

4/23/2015 7:39:00 AM

The Xiaomi Mi 4i is official and it's quite an amazing value for its extremely affordable $200 full retail (off-contract) price. One crucial element of the experience, however, is the camera that we're yet to take a deeper look at. Xiaomi has just released the official guide for the Mi 4i, and we can take a first dive in the camera specs, and even see the first sample test images from the shooter.

First, let's recap the specs: the Xiaomi Mi 4i features a 13-megapixel main, rear camera using either a Samsung or a Sony sensor, and it's got a fast, f/2.0 ...

Xiaomi Mi 4i price and release date: shockingly low price, registrations start April 30th
4/23/2015 6:57:00 AM

The Xiaomi Mi 4i price has just been unveiled and it is an absolute shocker: the 5-inch phone with a 1080 x 1920-pixel display and Snapdragon 615 system chip will be sold for just 12,999 Indian rupees. Okay, so how much is this in a more recognizable currency equivalent? That translates to just around $200 off-contract.

A shockingly low price tagXiaomi officially counts the Mi 4i as a 'flagship' device (a term that's very watered down at the moment), and in its comparison with similar class devices, the company manages to have half the price. That's truly ...

4/23/2015 6:45:00 AM

Today might be one sad day for Android users grown accustomed to the comfort of traveling with Nokia's HERE offline maps suite in their pocket. Nokia is reportedly spinning off the HERE division, and will be selling it for about $3.2 billion. This much we already knew, but now Bloomberg is reporting which companies have lined up to buy it, and the list reads like the who-is-who of Silicon Valley, and even car companies are in the queue.

The biggest news in the Bloomberg report is that Apple is among the HERE maps bidders, but so are Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba, and even a consortium ...

Apple patents a touchscreen that emulates different materials thanks to vibrations, temperature
4/23/2015 6:39:00 AM

Due to various reasons, Apple is one of the tech players that has a great many patents and patent applications up its sleeve. The latest addition to their invention portfolio is a touchscreen display that can simulate the feel of various materials.

The patent has been granted by the USPTO today, April 23, and explains that the display makes use of an actuator to vibrate the surface of the screen and change its temperature in order to fool users that they are not touching a plastic display, but a material of other origin.

The actuator that causes ...

New Bento Android launcher project aims to redefine personalization
4/23/2015 6:16:00 AM

There are many launchers out there that promise a ton of personalization and individuality, and some, like Aviate, Google Now, or EverythingMe, even manage to adapt to your daily lifestyle to a greater extent. There is a new kid arriving soon on the launcher block, though, which kind of combines the best of the above, and strives to change completely the way we think about interaction with our phones - like, a screen with app icons and widgets on it.

To fulfil this premise, Bento means to use the cards system, but not in the way that Google Now uses it. Bento plans ...

LG G4 makes brief cameo on official LG video: shows off genuine leather back
4/23/2015 5:21:00 AM

The LG G4 has leaked out practically in its entirety by now, and there's little left to imagination for the official unveiling that LG will hold with international events in six large global metros on April 28th.

While we have seen a lot about the LG G4 in images, it's somewhat different to see it live on video, and that's exactly what LG offers us in this latest teaser video from LG Korea.

The focus falls on the beautiful geniune leather back and the craftsmanship that goes into making that material fit the LG G4. We've already seen leaks that show that ...

Report: LG G4 to be priced higher than Samsung Galaxy S6, lower than Galaxy S6 edge
4/23/2015 4:58:00 AM

As we get closer to the April 28th media event at which LG will unveil its new flagship model, we are still in the dark when it comes to pricing of the handset. But some light has now been placed on the subject. A report published on Thursday suggests that in South Korea, LG will price the LG G4 at a range in between the Korean retail price of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. This would mean that the handset will be priced in the country somewhere in between $795 USD and $910 USD.

In South Korea, where the LG G4 can be pre-ordered from SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ for $825, ...

4 iOS/Android fighting games that are times better than Mortal Kombat X
4/23/2015 4:47:00 AM

Mortal Kombat X, the latest installment in the classic game series, is now available on both iOS and Android. Don't pop the champagne yet - it's nothing like the classic Mortal Kombat games we've once played and had fun with. This card-based "fighting" game indeed comes with fancy graphics, but the gameplay is as disappointingly out of sync with the roots of the legendary game series.

If Mortal Kombat has evoked dear memories of old-school fighting 1vs1 battling, then MK X will probably embitter you. Fortunately, there is a host of mobile games that will serve fans of the genre ...

Poll results: Would you buy the global equivalent of the Sony Xperia Z4?
4/23/2015 4:43:00 AM

Courtesy of its 6-month refresh cycle, Sony's flagships often have a hard time convincing owners of their respective predecessors to upgrade. That's normal – despite packing the latest and greatest, even the mobile industry is incapable of making such technological leaps forward in such a short amount of time. This presents a problem – one of perception more than anything – as some feel that the new thing doesn't necessarily bring enough 'new' to the table to warrant another upgrade so shortly after.

This appears to be the case with the Sony Xperia Z4, too, ...

BlackBerry Leap now shipping in the U.S. and U.K.
4/23/2015 3:48:00 AM

A little more than a week ago, we told you that the BlackBerry Leap was available for pre-orders in the U.K. Now, the latest smartphone from BlackBerry is shipping in the U.S. in addition to the U.K. This is far from being BlackBerry's highest spec'd phone. But with the latest and greatest build of BlackBerry 10 (10.3.1 to be precise) pre-installed on the device, it gives it certain features such as BlackBerry Assistant, which is a voice activated personal assistant like Siri, Google Now and Cortana.

The BlackBerry Leap also is equipped with BlackBerry Blend which allows you to view your ...

Monsters from Asia: the all-aluminum, $400 LeTV 1 Pro with its QHD display, 4GB of RAM, and 13MP OIS camera
4/23/2015 3:42:00 AM

When you think about super high-end smartphones from Asia, and specifically China, brand names such as Xiaomi, Oppo, vivo, and Meizu come to mind. But if you thought that the market there has matured enough for hefty enough barriers of entry to be raised, you're wrong, and smartphone entrant LeTV is the living proof.

Now, LeTV, if you've ever heard of it, is a company a bit alike both Netflix and YouTube, as it hosts tons and tons of video content online, but also has a hardware arm that churns out smart gadgets and even internet-enabled TVs. Smartphones, ...

Is a 5.5-inch phone too large for you?
4/23/2015 3:35:00 AM

Phones these days seems to come in two conventional sizes: the regular size for a flagship display hovers from around 4.7 inches to 5.2 inches, while the other big category is that of phablets where screens are commonly between 5.5 inches and... likely, infinity (Huawei's P8 Max claims it's a phone, yet it packs an enormously huge 6.8-inch screen!).

Sure, it's a small difference (especially when you compare 5.2-inch phones with 5.5-inch phablets), but it is a real choice that consumers face when they have to pick a new device.

Is ...

The Xiaomi Mi 4i is coming, and it's expected to bring a little revolution when it comes to affordable flagship-grade smartphones with an alluring price to feature set.

Brand new design, software and camera combo tipped for Sony's next Xperia flagship
4/23/2015 2:22:00 AM

We've barely cooled off from the Xperia Z4 announcement the other day - an upgraded version of the Z3 that is so far scheduled for Japan only - when rumors about an eventual Z5 started flowing, and now a mysterious tip about a thorough Sony mobile camera overhaul appears.

Famed leakster Ricciolo, who has been spot on with his leaks and predictions so far, especially when it comes to Sony, tweeted what looks a deliberately smudged screenshot, touting a "new Camera/sensor/lens/software" combo, but also a fresh "design/identity" for an upcoming Sony flagship, too. We ...

Mortal Kombat X lands on Android: in-app purchases, gore, swiping and tapping galore!
4/23/2015 2:18:00 AM

A few weeks ago, the latest title in the legendary Mortal Kombat game series - Mortal Kombat X - executed a fatality and landed on iOS. Fortunately for Android fans, the game has just "somersaulted" and soft-released on Android in select regions.

Mortal Kombat X treats us to beautiful graphics, impressive ending moves, and oh-so-unexciting gameplay that couldn't be more disappointing. Alas, Mortal Kombat X for mobile devices is not the fighting game all of us were waiting for, as it's more of a a card game with fighter building.

In the ...
