Did the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6/Galaxy S6 edge impact Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales?
4/21/2015 11:30:00 AM

Based on data released by ATLAS Research & Consulting, the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge during the second week of this month coincided with a small decline in Korean sales of the Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus. The vice-chairman of the research firm, a gentleman with the name Jang, Joong-hyeok, said "It is very natural for iPhone 6 sales to decline, as six months have passed since its release." But considering the decline that ATLAS is talking about, we're sure that the top brass in Cupertino never even gave this information a second thought.

The ...

Twitter expands its direct messaging service, works on detecting and limiting abusive posts
4/21/2015 11:30:00 AM

Twitter announced yesterday that it is expanding its direct messaging service by introducing two new features. One allows popular accounts to engage in private conversation with their subscribers without following them back, while the other allows users to receive direct messages from anyone on Twitter. Until today, the direct messaging feature only worked between users that followed each other.

In order to prevent abuse, users will have to explicitly select the new features. However, although the new settings are turned off by default, there are already some concerns ...

HTTPS vulnerability discovered in 1500 iOS apps
4/21/2015 10:14:00 AM

According to a recent report, 1,500 iOS apps are currently affected by an HTTPS vulnerability bug that enables attackers to snoop on sensitive private information. The bug was introduced with the 2.5.1 version of AFNetwork, a popular networking library for iOS and Mac OS X apps. The vulnerability was discovered back in February, and patched with version 2.5.2 in late March, but some apps are still using the old version of the library, hence opening the door to a potential attacker.

On April 1st, when researchers from SourceDNA initially scanned 1 million of the 1.4 ...

Eventual Xperia Z4 Compact and Z4 Ultra spotted in a regulatory database
4/21/2015 9:44:00 AM

A couple of upcoming Sony phones have been logged in the Indonesian POSTEL database, and those seem to be the rumored Xperia Z4 Compact and Xperia Z4 Ultra.

Given that the Z3 Compact carries the internal coding D58xx, we can assume that the E5803 listed here is its successor. The one listed with a 68 prefix caught our attention, though, as that's the coding of the 2013 Z Ultra (C68xx), which, with its 6.4" display, and a thin, waterproof body, was pretty much ahead of its time.

Not anymore, though, as the ever-increasing smartphone screens show, ...

This Android 6.0 Muffin video concept calls for a Multi-Window feature, more Material Design goodness
4/21/2015 8:55:00 AM

Android 1.0 Alpha, Android 2.0 Beta, Android 1.5 Cupcake, Android 1.6 Donut... all the way to Android 4.4 KitKat and Android 5.0 Lollipop. Notice a relationship? That's right, not only is Google always using the names of sweets for its major Android updates, but it has, so far without a fault, followed an alphabetical order for those name. So after KitKat came Lollipop, and after Lollipop we're guaranteed to have something starting with an M.

Like Muffin. That, at least, is one possibility, and it certainly sounds widely-appreciated enough to appeal to Google. A concept video, ...

The Galaxy S6 acts sassy in its new promo videos
4/21/2015 8:55:00 AM

Samsung has released two new promo vids to showcase its new flagship duo – the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge – though, the comedic voiceover does not talk about the two different models, rather it elaborates on features that they both sport. It's a sassy-narrated commercial, which pretends like the phone itself is "talking" to us.

So, in around 120 seconds per clip, we get informed about the fast-charging, wireless charging, and Ultra Power-saving modes, as well as the new camera and its capabilities. Well, we can't say we haven't been hearing all of this over and over ...

Samsung launching an accessory-finding app for the Galaxy S6
4/21/2015 8:26:00 AM

Samsung has been slowly building towards its own ecosystem for this past year – with the Level series of headphones, various smartwatch launches, and even the animal-branded battery packs. Naturally, the company would now love to draw more attention to its variety of products that can accompany your brand new, shiny Galaxy S6 / S6 edge. So, first, we were treated to a Galaxy S6 Experience, which is a little app that quizzes you, tries to guess what kind of person you are, and goes ahead and suggests the accessories that you should plan to buy with your new Sammy flagship.

Now, we are, reportedly, ...

Samorost 3 first trailer teases a game with outworldly, super cool graphics and more
4/21/2015 8:25:00 AM

There is something about games with such outstanding, outworldly and weirdly beautiful graphics that has us secretly dreaming of one day witness those fantasy worlds (even if it was via the wonders of virtual reality), and the upcoming iOS game Samorost 3 is exactly that type of a dreamy creation.

Set in the best traditions of Samorost (and also reminding us a lot of Machinarium, another game by the very same Amanita Design studio based in the Czech Republic) with elaborate mechanical puzzles playing out in a nocturnal fantasy world filled with weird creatures, Samorost 3 tells ...

Samsung Galaxy S5 replacement parts (display, touchscreen, battery, home button, ribbons) and where to get them
4/21/2015 7:59:00 AM

A grim picture

According to a late 2014 study carried out by extended warranty provided, SquareTrade, Americans have spent a cool $23.5 billion on repair or replacement of their smartphones in the last 7 years. That same study also found that 26% of folks stateside have cracked the screen of their iPhone and 15% of them are using it that way.

Those are some mind-boggling statistics. And more importantly, they seem to capture reality accurately from what we can tell – damaged and totaled smartphones aren't as rare a sight as we'd all like it to be, despite the fact ...

4/21/2015 7:58:00 AM

Samsung SDS, an IT services subsidiary of Samsung Group, announced yesterday that it is planning to launch a simple fingerprint-based mobile payment system by the end of the month. Although the system will initially launch in South Korea, the company has also announced plans for a global roll-out. At the moment, it's unclear if this mobile payment system will be a part of the Samsung Pay initiative, or if we're talking about an independent service.

According to the South Korean media, Samsung's biometric authentication system is the second in the world to have received certification ...

This extremely slim, bezel-less phone looks like a concept, but a big company is actually making it
4/21/2015 7:56:00 AM

Last week, we were blown away with the three new phones a new comer to the phone industry offered. We're talking about LeTV, a Chinese company that did what Netflix does before Netflix even existed, and the trio of smartphones it unveiled last week.

Now, another new-comer from China is preparing to blow us away with its new smartphones. The company is PPTV, a rival to LeTV, hence - another video streaming media company going mobile.

PPTV has been teasing a new smartphone and these latest leaked renders look like a concept. Yet, according to all the rumors, they are not - the ...

AUO reportedly blessed with iPhone panel orders, including a 4" one for an iPhone 7c
4/21/2015 7:26:00 AM

Just when one renowned analyst tipped that a 4" iPhone 6c is unlikely, comes the speculation that Apple has sourced AU Optronics (AUO) as an alternative display supplier for the upcoming iPhone 6S (or iPhone 7), iPhone 6S Plus, and... surprise, surprise... iPhone 6c.

Those murky "supply chain sources" are saying that Apple wants to diversify its screen panel suppliers - both for current and future iPhones, as the yields have been inconsistent from the current crop of iPhone screen panel makers. AUO is apparently in flux to start making 4.7- and 5.5-inch LTPS In-Cell displays ...
