5 ways to extend the HTC One M9's battery life
4/24/2015 9:56:00 AM

The HTC One M9 is a joy to have, but it's not a smartphone that can easily last you through 8 hours of enthusiastic use. Thankfully, there is a good number of ways to ensure your metallic friend gets you through the day, or in the worst case scenario, provides precious minutes of functionality when its battery percentage hits single digits. The easiest one is to get an ample battery pack, of course, but these aren't always convenient and do nothing to make the HTC One M9 less power hungry. So, here are five things you should consider in order to improve the flagship's battery life from the inside.

Leo's Fortune celebrates its first birthday, slashes the price to $0.99 for Android and iOS devices
4/24/2015 9:41:00 AM

Developer: 1337 & Senri / Tilting PointDownload: Android, iOSGenre: AdventurePrice: $4.99

A year ago, the then 4 man-strong gaming development studio, 1337 & Senri LLC, released Leo's Fortune – a game that proved a smashing hit with both reviewers and consumers alike. We took a look at the game back in July 2014, and we rated it very highly for its unique blend of captivating game play and top notch graphics. The game was initially showcased on-stage at Google's I/O 2014 event, and went on to win an Apple Design ...

Is Samsung looking into dual-camera device for next year?
4/24/2015 9:37:00 AM

We have already seen all kinds of experiments with cameras on smartphones, and a dual-camera setup is nothing new: in fact, the 2014 HTC One M8 features a dual rear camera with the secondary cam used to capture depth information, adding that extra dimension to images, and allowing for the experimental bokeh-like effect to images that helps separate your subject from the background.

Now, rumors straight out of Korea claim that Samsung itself is testing a dual-sensor camera solution for an upcoming device. The report claims that the industry has reached a plateau in camera quality and ...

Nokia exec: our Android phones are coming in 2016, R&D center will be moved to China
4/24/2015 9:35:00 AM

Nokia's Microsoft-induced restrictions on producing phones, and using its brand on them, will expire next year, and the Finnish communications juggernaut already hinted it will be back in the mobile industry with a vengeance then.

It turns out, as per the President of Nokia China, that the company is actually going to fulfil many fanboys' dreams, and will start churning out Android smartphones, likely manufactured in Sichuan, where Nokia's R&D center will be relocated for good as well.

We know that Nokia toyed around with Android before, and ...

Android Lollipop won't be coming to Samsung Galaxy S4 mini units due to memory limitations
4/24/2015 9:01:00 AM

If you happen to be one of the relatively few Samsung Galaxy S4 mini owners, we have some bad news: Android 5.0 Lollipop is unlikely to reach your device, now or ever.

Why? Well, according to a tweet sent out by UK carrier Three, TouchWiz based on Lollipop is just too memory hungry, and that makes it impossible for the Galaxy S4 mini's unimpressive hardware to ensure smooth performance. Unfortunately, it seems that the source here isn't just a random PR employee at the network provider – according to the aforementioned tweet, Samsung itself has confirmed that the S4 ...

Living with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4: a camera review
4/24/2015 8:52:00 AM

If I had a penny for every time someone asked me which smartphone they should get, I'd now have... a jar full of pennies that no cashier would be willing to accept. Cheesy jokes aside, people often request my advice as a professional smartphone handler, and before I guide them to a particular model, I ask them what they want their smartphone to be good at. As you can probably guess, most folks' priority is the camera; they want a smartphone that can take good photos and videos.

Having this in mind, I figured out that dedicating a generous portion of my Samsung ...

Scratch test shows the limits of Apple's Ion-X glass on the Watch Sport
4/24/2015 7:44:00 AM

With pricing ranging from $349 to the tens of thousand dollars, it's fair to say that you have quite some choice when it comes to Apple's Watch. But, as you can imagine, more money gets you a better gadget, and not just in terms of cosmetics – like more premium straps and bezel materials – but also superior essentials. We're referring to the protective sheet of glass that Apple is using for its different Watch models – the cheapest, Watch Sport variant has to make do with Ion-X glass, while the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition ones are treated to sapphire glass.

5 ways to extend the Samsung Galaxy S6's battery life
4/24/2015 7:28:00 AM

The Samsung Galaxy S6 excels at many things, but amazing battery life isn't among them. Thankfully, the situation is anything but critical, and there is a good number of ways to ensure your Galaxy S6 gets you through the day or provides you precious minutes of functionality when the battery percentage hits single digits.

Probably the best among them is the Galaxy S6's quick charging ability which, provided you have the original charger or any Qualcomm QuickCharge-compatible launcher around, can give you plenty of fuel in just 10 minute bursts of charging. But if that's ...

How to configure the backlight behavior of Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 edge's capacitive keys
4/24/2015 7:23:00 AM

With its new Galaxy flagship, the Galaxy S6, Samsung has slimmed down and streamlined TouchWiz UI. In fact, Samsung's newest UI is so much cleaner than its predecessor that it's lacking a bit of relatively useful features that were once present.

Among these is the feature that allowed you to determine whether the capacitive keys at the bottom light up or not, and for how long they will stay turned on.

This feature is nowhere to be found on the Galaxy S6/S6 edge, which might slightly disappoint some die-hard Samsung fans, as it was actually a useful one. Worry ...

Apple releases three new Apple Watch ads that highlight its still questionable usefulness
4/24/2015 6:48:00 AM

Do you need a smartwatch? We've been using them ever since they first came out, and we've got to admit that that's hardly the case. At best, a smartwatch is a style piece that can potentially save you from having to whip out your phone once or twice a day. Hardly a big selling point, is it?

But while we have, nevertheless, remained curious as to the future of smartwatches, it's only now that Apple has entered the space with its Watch that we're actually intrigued. The Apple Watch is significantly more functional out of the gate than rival solutions, and its entry onto the ...

ARM details Cortex-A72: Intel Core-M performance coming to your phone
4/24/2015 6:34:00 AM

ARM introduced a couple of new chips for 2016 including the Cortex-A72 processor and the Mali T-880 graphics chip not long ago, and today the company detailed the new A72 further. In addition to the Cortex-A72 processor being with 20-60% increase in instructions-per-clock over the current Cortex-A57 king (read: HTC One M9 and Galaxy S6), it can also consume up to 75% less energy than last year's ARM finest.

While the figures above can be attributed merely to the generational die shrink, as ARM is aiming the Cortex-A72 architecture at the 16nm production process, it is interesting ...

Huawei P8 Review
4/24/2015 6:30:00 AM

Introduction
Getting noticed in the smartphone space is increasingly getting tough, especially in the Android space, now that the Samsung Galaxy S6 has set the bar for everyone else. Last year, Huawei managed to pique our interest with the Ascend P7, its flagship phone that showed to us all that the company is capable of delivering a quality performing smartphone in a premium package – while also retaining a pretty svelte chassis. Staying relevant is key to long term growth, so knowing that, the company is hoping that its latest effort is enough to remain competitive.

With ...

Living with the Samsung Galaxy S6: Day Zero
4/24/2015 6:00:00 AM

If you've ever used a high-end smartphone for longer than a few days, and I assume that you almost surely have, then the following picture is all too familiar: You spend weeks raving about how good it is, then confirmation bias kicks in and that hype that you built yourself reaches an all-time high. Such an episode is typically followed by a purchase of the given device. And then, it's a few weeks of honeymoon bliss.

Not everything is as you thought it would be, of course, but what's a spot of bother when looking at the big and glorious picture that ...

Very "mature": image of an Android pissing on Apple's logo found in Google Maps
4/24/2015 5:14:00 AM

The rivalry between Apple and Google will certainly remain one of the most heated ones in the tech world for some time. Both giants regularly takes light (and sometimes not so light) jabs at one another - in one of Apple's 2014 keynotes, Tim Cook referred to Google's Android as "toxic hellstew of vulnerabilities", while Google has also mentioned Apple a few times in its announcement events.

Well, the rivalry took an unexpected and not-so-mature turn - the folks over at TeamAndroid have stumbled upon something pretty curious on Google Maps. If you navigate to the outskirts Rawalpindi, a large ...

Building up on this info, a fresh rumor originating from popular leakster @OnLeaks claims that the 9.7-inch version of the Galaxy Tab S2 will measure just 5.5 mm across its waist.

Previous rumors claimed that Samsung is working on a 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S2 prototype that measures 237.1 x 168.8 x 5.4 mm, but OnLeaks claims that the tablet will be slightly less compact, at approximate ...

Google revenue and profit grow in Q1 2015 despite struggling Nexus
4/24/2015 4:26:00 AM

Google has released its financial results for the first quarter of 2015, and good news is that revenue and profits are growing, but not as fast as expectations set by Wall Street analysts.

Google raked in $17.3 billion revenue in the first quarter of 2015, a 17% increase year-on-year, and operating income stood at $4.45 billion, a 26% growth on the year. At the same time, expectations by the street pointed to $17.5 billion revenue. Shares rallied by more than 3% after market hours.

Google still makes the overwhelming majority of its money from ads, but the Google Play Store business ...
