Sprint now offering free international roaming

Sprint is taking another page out of T-Mobile's playbook and announced Friday that it was offering International Value Roaming. This new feature gives customers unlimited data roaming and texting while traveling to select countries in Europe, Latin America, and Japan.

The data roaming, like T-Mobile's plan, allows no charge use at 2G speeds, enough for email, messaging and basic browsing. Voice calls are billed at 20-cents-per-minute, to any destination.

Google X labs working on next-gen battery for mobile devices

According to a story in Friday's Wall Street Journal, a small four person group inside Google X labs shifted in 2013 from testing third party batteries, to looking at new technologies that Google could use itself on devices like smartphones, wearables, tablets and more. The group, led by former Apple battery expert Dr. Ramesh Bhardwaj, was originally formed back in 2012.

Nokia wants to sell Here Maps (and its entire maps business)

One year after selling its mobile phone division to Microsoft, Nokia is now reportedly pondering the sale of its maps business, which currently develops Here Maps. According to Bloomberg, the Finnish company might do this in order to focus on its wireless network business.

Bloomberg has it that Nokia has already contacted potential buyers, including Uber, and unspecified German carmakers (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Volkswagen Group might be included here).

Right now, Nokia's maps business is evaluated at $2.1 billion, considerably less than the $8.1 billion that Nokia paid in 2008 to ...

 

Android Lollipop updates for HTC One E8, Desire EYE and Butterfly S now rolling out

HTC today started updating three of its non-flagship smartphones to Android Lollipop: the One E8, the Desire EYE, and the Butterfly S (which is a pretty old device, as it's been released almost two years ago, in mid 2013).

According to HTC ROM developer LlabTooFeR, the Desire EYE and Butterfly S are being updated to Lollipop in Taiwan, while the One E8 is getting the update in Hong Kong. Users in other regions will likely receive the update pretty soon, too, though for now we can't say exactly when it's going to happen. Tim Cook says pre-order sales for Apple Watch are "great"

Apple CEO Tim Cook, visiting an Apple Store in California on Friday afternoon, told financial cable channel CNBC that pre-order sales for the Apple Watch are great and that consumers' reaction to the timepiece has been "extraordinary." Cook also showed reporters his favorite model, a stainless steel Apple Watch with a white band.
