About two weeks ago, we showed you some still images of the Xiaomi Mi 4 running Windows 10 for Phones. These photos were leaked right after a report was published indicating that Microsoft was planning on offering Windows 10 for Phones ROMs for selected Android handsets. Microsoft is hoping that after getting a taste of Windows on their phone, Android users will become Windows-lifers.

The first phone being tested for the program is the Xiaomi Mi 4. Microsoft chose the phone because its users have a history of responding quickly to software updates sent out by the manufacturer. Xiaomi has ...

64% of Americans own a smartphone, but it becomes an issue with money for 23% of them
4/1/2015 11:16:00 AM

The latest numbers from the Pew Research Center show that 64% of Americans owned a smartphone at the end of last year. That is a pretty meaningful jump from the 35% who owned a smartphone three years ago. 15% of those polled say that a smartphone is their main connection to the internet. But smartphones are not cheap to use. 23% of U.S. smartphone owners and 48% of those who are dependent on their handset have been forced to shut or suspend their service because of the cost.

The survey, which covered more than 2000 people contacted by telephone, revealed that U.S. smartphone users are not ...

Coachella and Lollapalooza ban selfie sticks
4/1/2015 9:43:00 AM

My oh my, has the selfie trend really picked up this last year. As manufacturers acknowledged the fad and started to build phones with better frontal cameras and developing software, which aids selfie-snapping, it was only a matter of time before an accessory like the "selfie stick" became a thing.

Naturally, as the accessories for self-photography are getting more famous, so are people's concerns with going out in a public setting, like a show, exhibition, or sightseeing, and being surrounded by selfie lovers waving sticks around. Well, naturally, show execs have picked up on the trend ...

4/1/2015 9:28:00 AM

High-end smartphones have become more attractive and expensive, but the unfortunate side effect is an unprecedented rise in smartphone theft! Unfortunately, there's no easy, painless way to prevent being robbed or mugged. But thankfully, there are apps out there that let you lock & wipe your smartphone remotely, or even look for it by tracing it with its inbuilt GPS sensor.

The creators of Thief.ly, however, sought a different route. Based on technology developed by ex-BlackBerry security experts, this app automatically activates itself the moment your smartphone suspects ...

Best cheap Chinese Android smartphones (2015 edition)
4/1/2015 8:53:00 AM

Looking back just two years ago, candid observers would be remiss not to point out the incredible advancements of the Chinese smartphone industry. In the span of just a dozen (or two) months, tiny local manufacturers turned into superstars by rapidly closing the quality gap between their incomprehensibly cheap wares and those of well-established giants.
