NBC drops Today Show app for Windows Phone; 6snap won't return to the Windows Phone Store
4/5/2015 10:38:00 PM
NBC's Windows Phone app for the Today Show has gone to the same place as Matt Lauer's hairline. In other words, they both have disappeared for good. This past week, NBC pulled the plug on the app, not that anyone would be surprised. The app hadn't been updated since April 2014 even while the iOS and Android versions of the app received new features last month. Some of the news on the app had been 8 months old.
The Today Show app came to Windows Phone in 2013 and featured news that was broadcast on the show for those who missed it on the air. It also offered Live Tile support, notifications ...
Samsung says it didn't pay fans to attend its Galaxy S6 launch event in China
4/5/2015 9:53:00 PM
According to a recent report coming out of China, Samsung allegedly paid hundreds of people to attend its Galaxy S6 and S6 edge launch event in Shanghai, China, which took place on Friday, April 3. Reportedly, up to 500 young people (under 30 years of age) were asked to show up and pretend to be Samsung fans during said event. However, Samsung is officially dismissing this report, saying that the whole story is "totally groundless and bogus."
Samsung has it that all the attendees (over 1,100, according to the company), including consumers and industry officials, were "formally invited" ...
Sharp looking to spin off its smartphone and tablet LCD panels business unit
4/5/2015 8:03:00 PM
Sharp Electronics is still having problems turning a profit. The company is on the verge of reporting its third net loss in the last four years and a pair of the electronic firm's banks (Mizuho Bank and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ) are demanding that Sharp sell businesses that are losing money. So the manufacturer is looking to spin off its LCD panel business. The Nikkei business daily says that the division, which provides LCD panels for smartphones and tablets, will be spun off before the end of the company's year next March. Government backed Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) could ...
Did you know that the first phone with a 3D display was launched in 2002?
4/5/2015 7:43:00 PM
Remember the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D? We won't blame you if you don't. Back in 2011, they made headlines for being the first two globally-available smartphones rocking 3D displays, but they didn't quite spark enough consumer interest to cause a 3D revolution on the smartphone market. That's why we don't really get to talk about 3D smartphones anymore, even though more of them have been launched since the debut of the Evo 3D and the Optimus 3D.
Interestingly, while these two were the first 3D phones to launch around the world, they weren't the first members of the rare breed. It ...
Bigger screen doesn't always mean bigger smartphone: 7 perfect examples to prove that
4/5/2015 6:22:00 PM
There's no perfect smartphone screen size, but one thing's clear: in the last years, displays have gotten bigger and bigger. Of course, this means that the overall size of smartphones has also increased, though a larger display doesn't necessarily mean a bigger device.
When we hear that a handset has, say, a 5.5-inch screen, while another packs a 6-inch one, most of us likely instantly imagine that the latter device is considerably larger. Obviously, that's not always true.
Some manufacturers are striving (and succeeding) to design their smartphones in such a way that they remain ...
