The official LG G4 camera samples are out
4/28/2015 12:28:19 PM

LG G4 went official today packing the latest developments the company has to offer - beautiful and unique design, Quantum LCD display of QHD resolution, Snapdragon 808 chip with a hexa-core CPU, and a brand new 16MP camera with a 1/2.6" sensor, which sits behind a bright f1.8 lens. This means an 11% increase in gathered light over the f1.9 lens in the Samsung Galaxy S6. The LG G4 camera is enhanced with optical image stabilization over three-axis system, an improvement over the two-axis setup on the G3. We already spent some quality time with the LG G4 and you can learn all about it right here. And while we already know the camera is meant for greatness, a few official camera samples wouldn't hurt. Without further ado, here are the official camera samples taken with the LG G4. LG G4 official camera samples Check the LG G4 specs here and our hands-on right...

LG G4 is official, strong on design and photography features
4/28/2015 10:46:30 AM

LG just unveiled its next generation flagship - the G4. The highly anticipated smartphone was announced at dedicated events, held simultaneously in London and New York. LG focused on three main areas in its presentation - design, display and camera. The genuine leather back which was the headline feature in numerous leaks is indeed the key styling element. LG is proud to have employed vegetable tanning, which is typical of the luxury leather industry and only 10% of leather goods are processed this way. Not all G4s will ship with a leather back though, and the removable plastic cover will come with a hammered pattern in either ceramic white or metallic gray. Each one will be curved though, albeit only slightly, with a 3000mm radius. The company claims that the gentle curve results in better handling and a 20% increase in rigidity. The LG G4 packs a 5.5-inch display of QHD resolution. LG has opted for a Quantum LCD panel, which is said to deliver outstanding color accuracy. LG claims the new display boasts 20% wider color reproduction, 25% improvement in brightness and 50% higher contrast than the G3. The new flagship is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808, a notch below the 810 top dog. It's a 64-bit chipset and packs a hexa-core processor in a dual-core Cortex-A57 and quad-core Cortex-A53 arrangement. LG claims that it has worked closely with Qualcomm in customizing the SoC and has achieved a level of performance higher than the Exynos 7420 in daily tasks. 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage are on board, and expansion via microSD is possible. The smartphone boots Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box with the company's latest UX 4.0 overlay. LG is keen to point out that UI has been stripped of bloatware and one such example is the use of Chrome as the sole browser in most markets. The camera of the G4 took center stage in the announcement, and it has all the merits to deserve it. It utilizes a 16MP sensor with a 1/2.6" diagonal, which sits behind a bright f1.8 lens. This means an 11% increase in gathered light over the f1.9 lens in the Samsung Galaxy S6. The G4 also comes with optical image stabilization which works over three axes, as opposed to the already capable two-axis system on the G3. Additionally, the OIS system is now able to compensate movements up to two degrees in range, compared to the predecessor's single degree. The camera app offers a lot of advanced features including high ISO settings, live histogram and manual shutter speed, and is capable of recording RAW images. The G4 is able to shoot panoramas up to a whopping 104MP, compared to the Galaxy S6 which is capped at 60MP. The main camera is complemented by an 8MP front unit and both are capable of shooting 2160p video. The LG G4 comes with support for wireless charging, but a dedicated back cover will need to be purchased to use it. Otherwise, the supplied 1.8A charger must be used to fill up the 3,000mAh cell. Power users will be happy to know that the battery is user-replaceable, too. The G4 will be available on its home Korean market starting tomorrow, but the rest of the world will need to wait a bit more. Pricing is yet to be detailed...

4/28/2015 9:06:45 AM

The LG G4 official unveiling is fast approaching and we are already on location, ready to bring you the scoop on the company's latest and greatest handset. The New York and London events both set for 3:00 PM GMT and be sure to check a little bit later for news and our live coverage. Like always, we will try to find a live stream, so you can follow along as the LG G4 becomes official. In the meantime, here is a quick reminder of what we already know about the upcoming handset. At this point, thanks to all the abundant renders, banners, a few live photos and even an alleged shot of the retail box, we are fairly well acquainted with the design and styling of the G4. The phone should spout a nicely curved body LG dubs "Slim Arch Design", even if 8.9 mm isn't all that thin. The back will feature genuine stitched leather, which should set the G4 apart from the crowd and while it might not be to everybody's liking, it does look quite stylish. LG has promised to offer more traditional back cover options as well. var CDown = function() { this.state=0;// if initialized this.counts=[];// array holding countdown date objects and id to print to {d:new Date(2013,11,18,18,54,36), id:"countbox1"} this.interval=null;// setInterval object } CDown.prototype = { init: function(){ this.state=1; var self=this; this.interval=window.setInterval(function(){self.tick();}, 1000); }, add: function(date,id){ this.counts.push({d:date,id:id}); this.tick(); if(this.state==0) this.init(); }, expire: function(idxs){ for(var x in idxs) { var now = new Date(); if( ((now.getTime() - this.counts[idxs[x]].d.getTime()) / 60000) < 59 ) this.display(this.counts[idxs[x]], "Now!"); else this.display(this.counts[idxs[x]], "Over"); this.counts.splice(idxs[x], 1); } }, format: function(r){ var out=""; if(r.d != 0){out += r.d +" "+((r.d==1)?"day":"days")+", ";} if(r.h != 0){out += r.h +" "+((r.h==1)?"hour":"hours")+", ";} out += r.m +" "+((r.m==1)?"min":"mins")+", "; out += r.s +" "+((r.s==1)?"sec":"secs")+", "; return out.substr(0,out.length-2); }, math: function(work){ var y=w=d=h=m=s=ms=0; ms=(""+((work%1000)+1000)).substr(1,3); work=Math.floor(work/1000);//kill the "milliseconds" so just secs y=Math.floor(work/31536000);//years (no leapyear support) w=Math.floor(work/604800);//weeks d=Math.floor(work/86400);//days work=work%86400; h=Math.floor(work/3600);//hours work=work%3600; m=Math.floor(work/60);//minutes work=work%60; s=Math.floor(work);//seconds return {y:y,w:w,d:d,h:h,m:m,s:s,ms:ms}; }, tick: function(){ var now=(new Date()).getTime(), expired=[],cnt=0,amount=0; if(this.counts) for(var idx=0,n=this.counts.length; idx All and all, the LG G4 looks quite exciting, so we really can't wait to see it officially announced. Sony Xperia Z4 to launch internationally as Xperia Z3+
4/28/2015 8:23:30 AM

A week ago, Sony Japan had quietly announced the new Xperia Z4 smartphone as the flagship device for this year. The Xperia Z4 is basically an incremental update to the Xperia Z3 and doesn't bring any major changes. As reported earlier however, the Xperia Z4 may not be the 2015 Sony flagship. To underline that, Sony will market the Xperia Z4 outside Japan as the Xperia Z3+. The info comes from the Sony SCR30 Style Cover Window description mentioning support for the "Xperia Z4/Z3+". The Xperia Z4 will be promoted internationally as the Xperia Z3+ and will bear the same hardware as well. Sony is saving up the fanfare for the Xperia Z3+ launch in select countries and is expected to make it available in May. Sony Xperia Z3+ will have the same OmniBalance design with 6.9mm or thicker profile packing 5.2" 1080p display, 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 mobile processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB expandable storage, 20.7MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and 2,930 mAh...

A gold-plated Apple Watch out of Vietnam costs just $1,000
4/28/2015 7:21:35 AM

The Apple Watch polarized opinions when it was officially unveiled and its pricing revealed to the public. The premium Watch Edition models, which come with a gold case, cost upwards of $10,000 with prices all the way up to $17,000. Well, if that sounds pricier than you're willing to pay, but your status or other considerations call for a gold Apple Watch, Vietnamese luxury specialists at Karalux may have just the right solution for you. They are offering an 18K gold plating job on the Apple Watch for a mere $300 to $400, bringing the total price to $1,000. 18K gold-plated Apple Watch That amount of cash will get you a 38mm Apple Watch with a stainless steel case covered in 18K gold, and black or white sports band. Opting for a classic buckle will cost you additional $300 for a total of $1,300. If you choose the 42mm model, the grand total reaches $1,400, still about a tenth of Apple's price tag. Naturally, it won't be the real thing, but it's still genuine gold and at that price it's as close as it gets to what you'd call a bargain in the Apple Watch realm. How and if you can get one out of Vietnam is unclear...

4/28/2015 6:36:33 AM

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, Samsung has definitely set the flagship bar pretty high yet again. Both handsets employ cutting-edge technology and offer premium quality and leading performance. Naturally, the Korean giant hasn't skimped on the software side as well. TouchWiz has received a major overhaul and the device works better than ever. But the perks don't stop there when you purchase a new shiny Samsung phone. As has become customary for Galaxy devices, both the S6 and S6 edge come with a gift bundle of apps and promotions, exclusively picked out by Samsung. This being said, none of the apps in the list is preinstalled or hidden away in the new Galaxy. Just like with previous models, the offers can be accessed through the Samsung App Store and each one is strictly opt-in. Galaxy S6 exhibiting overzealous RAM management, report users
4/28/2015 3:48:00 AM

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge come with the latest cutthroat DDR4 RAM technology, and 3 GB of the good stuff at that, but when it comes to the actual RAM management, Samsung might have dropped the ball, judging from several forum threads and user reports.

In a nutshell, Galaxy S6 owners are reporting a very aggressive RAM management, to the point where apps get constantly shut down, and there's 200-400 MB of RAM left only at any given time. Granted, Android's RAM usage is made this way, and the system feels best when most of the available RAM is utilized, that is why task killers ...

Alleged Meizu MX5 pictures leak, fingerprint sensor may be in tow
4/28/2015 3:27:00 AM

Meizu's current flagship duo – the MX4 and MX4 Pro – are doing quite well, selling in heaps and bundles in their homeland, while gaining worldwide popularity. Unique for their 5:3 display aspect ratio and super-thin bezels (~75% screen-to-body), which make the handsets comfy to hold, despite the fact that they still have 5.4" and 5.5" displays equipped at the front.

Now, seeing as both the aforementioned handsets were released around the end of 2014, we don't expect Meizu to launch any successors to their flagship line well until September, yet Chinese tech site cnBeta has managed to get ...

4/27/2015 9:36:00 PM

Announced back in September as a Nokia-branded device, the Lumia 735 has yet to be launched in the US. We heard that the handset could be released via both Verizon and Sprint, though for now there's nothing official about this.

While Microsoft removed the Lumia 735 from its US website, it looks like the smartphone will be launched Stateside after all. Earlier today, an interesting image was posted over at the official Lumia US Twitter account. Said image shows a previously unannounced Microsoft Lumia handset for Verizon Wireless. Upon closer inspection, we realized that the device looked ...

Oppo addresses R7 rumors with official renders, specs
4/27/2015 2:25:45 PM

Oppo R7 has really been a constant presence in the rumor mill, especially the last few days. A lot of users are excited about the prospect of an edge-to-edge, curved screen, but some new official information might leave a lot of them disappointed. It appears Oppo has decided to stop the rumor madness around the upcoming R7 and has sent us some official information about the device, which debunks most of the previous rumors and speculations. Judging from a set of official renders of the device, we can safely say, that the display is not what we expected. It is also worth noting that the images are concept renders and as such, might not be entirely accurate. Apparently, the R7 won't come with a curved, edge-to-edge display, like a recent Oppo patent and a lot of alleged videos and photos have been suggesting. Don't get disappointed though - the bezelless phone might still be in the making, just under a different name. Either way, the Oppo R7 will have a rather traditional-looking display, complete with some bezels. The overlaying glass does feature a 2.5D effect, but no actual edge can be seen. Actually, we did have at least one leak that was close to the actual thing. The Oppo R7, might not be the curved screen phone most were waiting for, but it does still have its merits. The device does look quite thin, perhaps even another record-holder and beautifully crafted with a metal frame and what appears to be a glass back. It is also worth noting that the camera is not protruding, which is not the case with most similarly slim handsets. This, however might suggest that the camera isn't quite as capable as the ones on the Galaxy S6 or the One M9, but, we can't really know for sure, before Oppo gives us some more insight. The promotional materials also make another thing clear - the upcoming R7 will feature the company's own VOOC fast-changing technology. This was more than expected, seeing how Oppo has really left the competition in the dust in this department, as confirmed by our Fast charging in-depth review. As far as specs on the R7 go, we still have only rumors to go by, which, given the current situation, we are a lot more inclined to question as well. In the past it has been said that the R7 should sport a MediaTek MT6795 SoC with octa-core CPU, as well as a 20.7 MP rear camera. 4G LTE support should be on board as well....

ZTE ZMAX returns to T-Mobile with warning to buyers not to hack the battery
4/27/2015 7:39:00 PM

Earlier this month, we told you that T-Mobile had pulled the ZTE ZMAX from the carrier's retail stores, including its MetroPCS pre-paid division. It had nothing to do with poor sales, as some had thought. Apparently, some of T-Mobile's customers were taking advantage of the easy to remove "non-removable" battery cover on the handset, and were trying to remove the cell.

A T-Mobile internal memo, which was disseminated today, confirms that a small number of ZMAX owners were trying to remove the 3400mAh battery from the handset. Because this action could have led to injuries, the carrier ...

Apple topped Wall Street expectations by selling 61.2 million iPhone units for its fiscal second quarter. That set a record for the most iPhones sold by Apple during the January through March period. CEO Tim Cook said that the company is seeing more people than ever switching to the iPhone from other smartphone models . Apple reported a 40% gain in-year-over-year iPhone sales. On a sequential basis, Apple reported 18% fewer iPhone sales from its fiscal first quarter, which is usually the best three month period of the year for the smartphone in terms of sales.

"Gently curved" LG Magna priced at $260, now available in India
4/27/2015 3:45:00 PM

While everyone is expecting LG to officially unveil its G4 flagship (this will happen tomorrow, on April 28), the company recently started selling another new smartphone: the LG Magna.

Announced back in February, the Magna is a mid-range handset that runs Android 5.0 Lollipop and has a "gently curved" design, as LG puts it. Only the back of the device is curved, so its display - a 5-inch 720p one - is still flat. The smartphone further offers an 8 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front-facing camera with Gesture Shot (for quick selfies), 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of expandable internal memory, a 1W speaker, ...

LG-VW820 makes another appearance heralding a new LG built Windows Phone for Big Red
4/27/2015 3:14:00 PM

It appears that LG might be prepping a new Windows Phone model. A report out of Germany today reveals that the LG-VW820 will be an entry-level Windows Phone handset. The model number appears on an Open Source software notice and again on an LG Open Source Code Distribution page. The former mentions a license that LG obtained from Microsoft and lists the Windows Phone Theme Manager 2.1.2. The latter shows that the LG-VW820 (the "VW" means that this particular model is going to Verizon Wireless) and the LG VW820SS are both Windows Phone flavored models.

Asus CEO: no Asus ZenWatch 2 this year, but two variants are being prepared for 2016
4/27/2015 3:01:00 PM

Jerry Shen, CEO at Asus, was recently quoted by NDTV claiming that his company will not launch a successor to the original Asus ZenWatch this year, and that the new smartwatch won't reach the market until next year at an unspecified date.

According to NDTV, Shen recently made the comments in New Delhi with the occasion of the Asus Zenfone 2 Indian launch event. Back in December 2014, the CEO was quoted by a Taiwanese newspaper claiming that the ZenWatch 2 will arrive in Q3 2015 with standalone voice calling capabilities, but it looks like the company had a change of ...

Apple sold more than 61 million iPhones in Q2 2015
4/27/2015 6:23:54 PM

Apple announced financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal 2015, which ended on March 28. Thanks to strong iPhone and Mac sales, as well as record App Store performance, the Cupertino giant recorded its best Q2 with net profit of $13.6 billion from $58 billion of revenue. The results handily trounce the $10.2 billion of profit and $45.6 billion of revenue from the same period a year ago. However, they are don't quite match the results from the all-time best fiscal Q1 2015 and the 74.5 million iPhones sold (this quarter included the busy holiday shopping season). Apple sold 61.2 million iPhones during the past quarter, while sales of iPad tablets and Mac computers were 12.6 million and 4.5 million units respectively. The company's CEO Tim Cook pointed at "a higher rate of people switching to iPhone than we've experienced in previous cycles." Cupertino's 40.8% gross margin beat the estimates for the quarter. The same goes for the company's revenue. Sales of the Apple iPad on the other hand, came in below expectations. Mac sales grew an annual basis. Next quarter should be quite interesting for Apple, as it will include sales of the hot new Apple Watch, as well as the brand new 12" Retina Macbook. The company expects to post revenue between $46 billion and $48 billion in the upcoming fiscal Q3. Source...

Alcatel Pop Astro will be launched by T-Mobile, leak reveals
4/27/2015 6:04:26 PM

Not long ago Alcatel started taking pre-orders for its 5.5-inch Idol 3 smartphone, which is a decently specced device at a very affordable price. That, however, is sold unlocked. Alcatel has partnered up with US carriers in the past, and it now looks to be doing the same with T-Mobile. Unfortunately for lovers of at least midrange mobile devices, the upcoming handset that Alcatel will make and T-Mobile will sell will be a cheap low-end one basically. It's going to be called Alcatel Pop Astro, as you can see from the image above, which is purported to be a shot of an internal leaflet from the magenta carrier. The Pop Astro will boast a 4.5-inch 540x960 touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera, a VGA front-facing shooter, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor (of unknown origin), 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of built-in (hopefully expandable) storage. It will run Android 4.4 KitKat, and will come with support for 4G LTE as well as Wi-Fi Calling and voice over LTE (VoLTE). Unfortunately no details about exact pricing or a release date are known right now. That said, given the specs we don't expect the Pop Astro to cost more than $100 to...

Sprint joins Verizon in releasing Lollipop for the LG G2
4/27/2015 3:37:36 PM

People generally consider Verizon to be America's worst carrier when it comes to software updates (or rather, how fast it is in releasing them). However, for the LG G2 Verizon proved to be a lot quicker with the Lollipop release than Sprint. Verizon's G2 units have been getting the tasty treat since last month, whereas Sprint is only now commencing its over-the-air rollout. So if you own an LG G2 bought from Sprint, expect to see an update notification popping up soon - within the next few days or weeks, that is. The new release contains everything that's new in Android 5.0 (both from Google as well as LG), but also an "update to FM radio software". After applying the update, you'll be on software version ZVG. The previous one was ZVE, released in October 2014. As usual, if you're impatient and don't want to wait for the update notification, you can try to manually check by using the appropriate option in your phone's Settings menu. Source |...

Oppo addresses R7 rumors with official images, specs
4/27/2015 2:25:45 PM

Oppo R7 has really been a constant presence in the rumor mill, especially the last few days. A lot of users are excited about the prospect of an edge-to-edge, curved screen, but some new official information might leave a lot of them disappointed. It appears Oppo has decided to stop the rumor madness around the upcoming R7 and has sent us some official information about the device, which debunks most of the previous rumors and speculations. Judging from a set of official renders of the device, we can safely say, that the display is not what we expected.

LG confirms it's working on a new Windows Phone
4/27/2015 1:35:17 PM

In December of last year, an ad network shared its stats for Windows Phones, and through that action revealed a then unknown LG VW820 handset. This was caught running Microsoft's mobile OS, and at the time we assumed LG might be thinking about jumping back into the Windows game after having had an exclusive relationship with Google's Android for a while. And the latest discovery on the matter seems to confirm that LG is indeed working on the VW820, which will run Windows. The Korean company's own website has two separate listings for the VW820, both oddly to be found in the area documenting the use of open source licenses. That's not something one would usually associate with a product running Microsoft software, but this does confirm that the device is real and we'll take that. Furthermore, the LG VW820 has been certified by the Bluetooth SIG as well, and it's unsurprisingly listed as a "mobile phone". There are no additional details though, so for now all we have to go on is the info revealed last year by that ad network - namely, that the LG VW820 has a 4.7-inch 480x854 touchscreen. This means we aren't looking at a flagship offering here, but rather a low-end handset. Since LG's documents are calling the VW820 a "Windows Phone", it might not launch running Windows 10 (which ought to drop the "Phone" part from its name). So we could see the device surface very soon with Windows Phone 8.1 on board. Then again, the use of "Windows Phone" in these documents may have nothing to do with anything, hence the VW820 could also run Windows 10 from day one. It's impossible to tell for sure. Past mumblings have said Verizon will offer a new LG-made Windows smartphone soon, so this may be it. On the other hand, it's also possible that it will get an internationally-sold version too.
