Cyanogen will continue to support OnePlus One in India; Micromax withdraws lawsuit
5/8/2015 9:49:00 AM

Last October, Android ROM developer Cyanogen reached an exclusive agreement with India's Micromax to drive the latter's line of Yu branded smartphones. This move seemed to take OnePlus by surprise. The company had just started to rollout its Cyanogen powered OnePlus One in India, and was quickly banned by an Indian court just 15 days after a high profile launch in the country. But the court lifted the ban, agreeing with OnePlus that its flagship spec'd phone is not competition for the entry-level Yu line.

Cyanogen and OnePlus ended their partnership at the end of last month, and the suit ...

First Nintendo smartphone game coming before the end of this year
5/8/2015 9:09:00 AM

Back in March, Nintendo announced that it was teaming up with developer DeNA to bring new Nintendo games to mobile platforms. We now know that the first of these games will be available before the end of this year. In all, we can expect five titles from Nintendo to appear before March 2017 according to CEO Satoru Iwata.

The executive reiterated that Nintendo will not simply port over existing titles. That's because the game play on smart devices is different than on dedicated gaming consoles and Iwata says that the results would not be positive. While Nintendo does plan on using some of ...

How to activate Chrome's Data Saver feature on Android & iOS
5/8/2015 9:01:00 AM

Lurking in Chrome's Settings menu is the nifty Data Saver feature. It tells the browser to start putting all incoming traffic through compression, thereby letting you get away with less data downloaded to your device - with virtually no change from the regular browsing experience. This can shave a nice amount of data off your monthly traffic, letting you get additional megabytes (or gigabytes) to use.

The feature is available on the Android and iOS versions of Chrome, and works just as advertised. If you feel like trying it out, head to the slideshow below, where we'll ...

5/8/2015 8:21:00 AM

Mother's Day is right around the corner in USA and, of course, with Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 edge still being pretty hot out of the oven – the company has launched a video ad, themed around the holiday but also keeping the new handsets steadily in the spotlight. The video depicts various humorous texts sent from "mom" and some of them – you may actually relate to.

If this happens to be the case, you may actually win something out of it – Sammy will be doing a Galaxy S6 edge giveaway where the funniest "mom text" will win one unit of the curved handset. To win, you must follow @SamsungMobileUS ...

LG G4 vs Apple iPhone 6 Plus
5/8/2015 8:09:00 AM

Introduction
LG's newest flagship, the LG G4, is no longer a subject of rumors and hearsay – it's already official and poised to hit the market later this month, relieving the LG G3 from its flagship duties. The phone will certainly play a pretty important role in LG's portfolio, because it needs to further solidify the already-established market positions of the second-largest South-Korean manufacturer. In order to do so, the new 5.5" Android gladiator will have to clash with another pretty successful device that races in the same display-size lane – the Apple iPhone 6 Plus.

Trivia: In its early days, Shazam was a call-in service, not an app!
5/8/2015 7:35:00 AM

Back in October 2014, ultra-popular song recognition app Shazam reported having identified some 15 billion songs. Sit back and think about this figure for a little bit — that's twice (and then some) the population of Earth! In a perfect world, that would have meant each and every one of us used Shazam to recognize that catchy tune twice.

Shazam's meteoric rise to fame is nothing short of amazing, and like a select few other apps, it's won itself an eternal spot in our hearts (we like you too, SoundHound). But success didn't just come overnight — the ...

Best MOBA games for iOS and Android
5/8/2015 7:06:00 AM

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game (MOBA) games have soared in popularity in recent years. What started as a rather small and user-developed modification for WarCraft III roughly a decade ago is now among the most popular and played game genres across all platforms.

The simple to understand yet hard to master games of this ilk -- like League of Legends, DOTA 2, and Heroes of the Storm -- are extremely competitive and currently being enjoyed by tens of millions of gamers each and every day.

Just as you might imagine, MOBA games have also popped up on the popular ...

Galaxy S6 arrives with a blown up battery, customer reports
5/8/2015 6:54:00 AM

Ahhh, major product launches – almost always are these events going to be accompanied by a bad lemon or two. The bigger the launch, the more lemons surface and, seeing as the Galaxy S6 has been quite popular and pre-orders have been skyrocketing – a number of problematic units have been delivered to users and, of course, pictured for the world to see.

First, we had the weird display issues with the Galaxy S6 edge, where some units would show funky colors and/or would have their frontal glass heavily scratched out of the box. Now, it seems that another problem, a bit more serious at that, ...

5/8/2015 6:48:00 AM

As if it were yesterday when we wished you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Yet, we look around and it's May already! In four short months, we ended up in a pile of flagship Android smartphones! No amount of industry analysts parroting the "high-end market saturation" mantra could keep the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC, Huawei, Sony & Xiaomi from merrily unveiling their proudest handsets to date - weeks, days, heck - mere hours after each other!

By now, the entire crop of first half 2015 flagships has been reaped, and we're already peeking into what the second half may have in store. ...

LG G4 vs Samsung Galaxy S6
5/8/2015 5:58:00 AM

Introduction
With Pantech gone, South Korea is left with just two notable smartphone manufacturers — LG and Samsung. Many of you will know that the cross-town rivalry between the two has been going on for a long time, as the two chaebols regularly clash in a number of industries, most notably smartphones.

Whether as a function of size — LG is half as big as its competitor — or strategy and talent, Samsung has consistently outdone the former in terms of phone sales. But while volumes are indicative of financial success, it doesn't mean that Samsung necessarily has the better handset at ...

Voodoo magic: 7 unique apps that seem impossible, but actually work
5/8/2015 5:50:00 AM

Between everyday apps that barely get the job done, and ones that pray on the naive by offering them the keys to the kingdom only to disappoint later, it's natural that the smartphone community has grown skeptical and untrusting of apps. Especially if they claim to do something that we can't wrap our minds around.

But some apps do beat the odds, and while their descriptions may sound a little like voodoo magic (especially if you're new to smartphones), they do actually deliver on their promise — as amazing as that may sound. In fact, most of them can be explained fairly ...

NVIDIA calls it quits in developing LTE modems
5/8/2015 4:43:00 AM

When it comes to building mobile devices with cellular connectivity, the go-to technology resource is almost exclusively Qualcomm and its long product list of systems-on-a-chip. MediaTek, Samsung, and Intel have been bolstering their operations to compete with the San Diego giant.

NVIDIA wanted to do the same, and acquired a company called Icera in 2011. Icera had its own designs for LTE modems and NVIDIA was going to leverage that technology to ride the ever-expanding smartphone phenomenon.

Turns out it is quite difficult to compete at the level, and NVIDIA has announced that it ...

Apple likely to find willing customer base to harvest DNA data which may revolutionize research
5/8/2015 4:34:00 AM

We have all heard or read about the grand plans Apple has for its ResearchKit, a set of tools that were made available in March, enabling researchers to gather data directly from opt-in users in various studies.

The first five applications allow end users to submit information about asthma, breast cancer, diabetes, heart health, and Parkinson's. The heart health study had more than 11,000 people sign up within the first day it was available.

Apple's ResearchKit is going to be part of an expanded vision, not only relying on user-inputted data for studies, but also allow studies where ...
