Sony Xperia Z4 Compact to be unveiled on May 13th?
5/6/2015 1:49:00 PM

While most "mini" versions of flagship phones are smaller in size with less impressive specs, Sony has taken a much different tact with its "Compact" line. The Sony Xperia Zx Compact models are indeed smaller than the full-size versions, but the specs are basically the same. Occasionally the smaller phones provide the better mobile experience. For example, users said that the 4.3-inch, 720p screen on the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was better than the 5-inch 1080p display on the full-sized model.

What brings this up is a report out of Russia that gives us a possible unveiling date for the Sony ...

AT&T ends automatic throttling for its customers with an unlimited 4G LTE plan
5/6/2015 10:39:00 AM

AT&T has been trying to get grandfathered unlimited 4G LTE accounts off of its books. It has tried everything including using a much harsher throttling policy for these customers than it applies to other subscribers. For example, those with a 3G or non-LTE 4G phone who have a grandfathered unlimited data plan are open for throttling after consuming more than 3GB of data in a month. But this slowdown occurs only "at times and in areas that are experiencing network congestion." In other words, these accounts are throttled only when the network is congested.

On the other hand, AT&T ...

Does the LG G4 have Quick Charge 2.0? Sorry, that's a no, and here's why
5/6/2015 10:17:00 AM

Quick Charge 2.0 is one of the Snapdragon chipsets' most coveted features, as it lets users get some good smartphone charging action with just a few minutes on the wire! However, not all Snapdragon-powered devices are privileged to it, which can be especially confusing when you know for sure that your smartphone's chipset has this feature.

Such is the case with the LG G4 and its Snapdragon 808 SoC, which Qualcomm proudly touts as Quick Charge 2.0-enabled. Of course it should be, as it's a recent SoC designed for upper mid-range devices that's fairly up to date (save for ...

How to secure your Android Lollipop device with screen pinning
5/6/2015 9:47:00 AM

Android Lollipop shipped with a nifty security feature that you may not know of! It's called screen pinning, and what it does is to pin an app of your choice to your smartphone or tablet's display. The very simple idea is about pinning an app, handing the device to someone who wants to use it, and letting them use only, and only this one app that's been pinned to the screen. Moreover, the feature can be combined with the typical screen lock (pattern, pin, password, etc), so if one presses the power button and locks the device, they'll have to get through the screen lock before they get to the pinned ...

Monsters from Asia: The aluminum ZTE Nubia Z9 with its 'border-less' design, 4GB RAM, and 16MP OIS camera
5/6/2015 9:29:00 AM

A month ago, we outlined the Nubia Z9 Max — a super high-end phone by ZTE's online-only, premium brand — but earlier today, the company announced an even more impressive device. Dubbed just Nubia Z9, the new device comes packing not just the latest in hardware, but also a number of other innovations.

Let's start with the obvious: the Z9 comes with what the Nubia PR people call 'borderless' design, though there's still a frame holding this thing together. But it's a really thin one, specifically at the left and right sides, which is darn impressive. Not ...

Everyone's after the golden Galaxy S6 & S6 edge, and Samsung has various theories to explain it
5/6/2015 9:04:00 AM

The smartphone arms race has become more of a gold rush, as according to Samsung's latest sales data, one in four European customers is always after the Galaxy S6 or S6 edge's Gold Platinum edition. The regal-colored device is either sold out, or near selling out, which Samsung interpreted as "a clear shift in European color preference" and adjusted production accordingly. Apparently, customers are becoming "more extroverted" in their color preferences compared to past years, when black and white smartphones dominated store shelves.

To better understand Europeans' golden craves, Samsung ...

A lengthy Wall Street Journal article, citing a study by Techno Systems Research, makes it clear that Sony isn't just moving a healthy amount of image sensors, specifically ones for smartphones, but it's actually the market leader — by a long shot. According to the findings, Sony held the whopping 40% of the entire camera sensors market in 2014, trailed by US, California-based OmniVision (15.7%) and South Korea's Samsung ...
