T-Mobile to offer the BlackBerry Classic starting May 13th
5/7/2015 9:36:00 AM

Looks like the feud between the two Johns has ended. No, we're not talking about the turf war on that shady street corner downtown. What we are trying to say is that the bad blood between T-Mobile CEO John Legere and BlackBerry CEO John Chen has simply been forgotten with the passage of time. If you recall, BlackBerry's Chen had chaffed at a special deal that the carrier was running that favored the iPhone over BlackBerry. Legere and Chen traded tweets with the T-Mobile executive giving Chen the absolute worst insult that any tech executive could receive. Legere called him a MySpace user. Both ...

How to easily turn your old Android phone, tablet, iPhone, or iPad into a potent IP camera
5/7/2015 8:57:00 AM

In this day and age, it's almost inevitable that one would have at least one old device laying around the house – too outdated to use, and probably too chafed to be worth anything on the second-hand market. Sure, one great idea is to recycle the little plastic boxes – with the current amount of gadgets that the manufacturers are currently churning out, it goes without saying that reusing materials is a definite must. On the other hand, you can find some way to make good use of them and hold off on buying a new dedicated gadget for the aforementioned task.

In this case, we are talking about ...

Only one Nexus device in history had a microSD slot, do you know which one it is?
5/7/2015 8:45:00 AM

While every rule has its exceptions, it's generally fair to say that when Google is serious about something, it tends to stick to its decision. Certainly, microSD cards in Android devices serve as one such example — Google hates those. Alright, perhaps 'hate' is too strong a word, but the search giant has made it clear on several occasions, directly or indirectly, that it feels they are an inferior alternative to flash storage, and one that is prone to misbehaving and causing all kinds of monkey business. When that happens, users typically blame either Android, or the manufacturer of their phone, ...

BlackBerry Leap introduced in India
5/7/2015 8:33:00 AM

BlackBerry's latest handset, the BlackBerry Leap, was introduced in India this morning. Already available in other regions, the device will be offered for sale in India sometime early next week. Pricing will be announced at the same time. BlackBerry and Amazon sell the model in the U.S. for $275.

The BlackBerry Leap is equipped with a 5-inch 720 x 1280 resolution screen. This provides a pixel density of 294ppi. Under the hood is the greybeard Snapdragon S4 Plus CPU. The dual-core processor is clocked at 1.5GHz. The Adreno 225 GPU handles graphics. 2GB of RAM is inside along with 16GB of ...

LG G4 vs Samsung Galaxy S6 edge
5/7/2015 7:19:00 AM

Introduction

LG and Samsung have been in constant competition against one another for the last several years, but if we're to strictly base their success on sales figures, it would arguably be Samsung who would claim bragging rights. Seriously, there's nothing wrong coming in second place, but when it happens time after time, it really begins to eat at you – and it doesn't help when you're always in Samsung's shadow either. More recently, too, the results haven't changed a bit, as LG's efforts have been in vain.

Chip maker MediaTek invests in Meizu shares
5/7/2015 7:03:00 AM

China-based manufacturer Meizu was obviously in good relations with SoC manufacturer MediaTek last year, as the former's MX4 flagship that was released in September 2014 was the first phone ever to rock the MT6595 SoC. If this doesn't underline a positive partnership between the two companies, then the fact that the MX4 was the first Meizu top-shelf handset to not ship with a Samsung chip humming under its hood could make a sceptic think twice.

Well, industry insiders in China have reported that this relationship may be going even deeper, as MediaTek has purportedly invested into the smartphone ...

Tinder Plus price let you down? Date with 5 alternative apps that are just like Tinder
5/7/2015 6:38:00 AM

Tinder managed to get a headstart among dating apps with its easy swipe-based system, and the burgeoning user base that was spreading out like forest fire. With the introduction of Tinder Plus, however - a rather pricey subscription tier that unlocks access to the best of Tinder - those user numbers are bound to take a nosedive.

Analysts are predicting that just about 5% of the regular Tinder users will be flocking over to the paid version, which costs ten bucks a month, if you are relatively young, and the borderline ageist $20 for those over 30.

Fret ...

Do you use the emoji pack of your phone's keyboard?
5/7/2015 5:23:00 AM

With the stock Android and iOS keyboards, as well as most third-party ones now featuring emoji - those little Japanese ideograms/smileys that are proliferating around the globe, we wanted to ask you how often do you actually use those funny characters to express emotions while chatting with or messaging someone.

Emoji packs are becoming a huge draw towards various third-party keyboards, and are very often the only paid aspect of those apps, along with various theming options. That's all fine and dandy, but, unless, you are a 12-year-old girl, or live in Asia, emojis, ...

Full Xiaomi and Huawei 2015 roadmap leaks with specs: Mi4s and Mate 8 next month, Mi5 for the holidays
5/7/2015 4:27:00 AM

Huawei and Xiaomi just scored the motherload of all leaks, purportedly showing their whole roadmap for the year, and if this scheme above turns out legit, the companies would undoubtedly be quite miffed about it being let out in the wild. While Xiaomi's roadmap is corroborated by tangential evidence from separate rumors about the Mi5 here and there, the Huawei part at least seems to closely resemble another roadmap that was sent to us back in November, out of which the Huawei P8 already materialized, and got reviewed by yours truly.

Samsung showcases the engineering behind Galaxy S6 edge in a mesmerizing new video
5/7/2015 3:38:00 AM

Samsung is apparently quite proud of the manufacturing process it used to arrive at the metal-and-glass unibody of the S6 edge flagship with its curved display, and for a good reason. The flexible AMOLED panel uses a plastic substrate, instead of the usual glass one, allowing it to be bent to the sides, and still display vivid imagery. How do you put the protective cover glass on top of the bent AMOLED in precisely the same side-sloping degree, though?

Well, Samsung is using a homebrew technology that it calls "3D Thermoforming," placing the reinforced glass between ...

OnePlus CEO all but confirms Snapdragon 810 and pricing for the OnePlus Two
5/7/2015 3:24:00 AM

Pete Lau, founder and CEO of OnePlus, has been discussing the company's upcoming flagship, presumably to be called OnePlus Two, with fans over Weibo – a Chinese social network. Aside from praising the home-brewed Hydrogen OS (or H2 OS), apparently an offshot or upgrade of the OxygenOS we've seen replacing Cyanogenmod as an operating system on OnePlus handsets following a fiasco of misunderstandings and deals gone sour, Lau also talked briefly on hardware and pricing.

Namely, the CEO seems to suggest, or at least – doesn't deny – that the OnePlus Two will be loaded with a Qualcomm Snapdragon ...

Great Little Places is Tinder for local eateries, find hidden gems while you travel
5/7/2015 3:17:00 AM

If you only count on Yelp and TripAdvisor to cover your food cravings while you travel, you might miss that great mom-and-pop local restaurants or pancake place that the locals frequent, as it will never in a million years make it to the popular guidebooks. We all know such places very often serve amazing food at rock bottom prices that are meant for patrons from the neighborhood, not tourists that are mentally prepared to spend extra anyway.

Moreover, it's a great way to experience the real topical cuisine of the place, unlike the prefabricated "local" recipes you might find ...

Galaxy S6/S6 edge vs LG G4 vs One M9 vs Xperia Z4: Which one you'd rather have? (poll results)
5/7/2015 2:50:00 AM

On Monday, we asked you a very important question: Given the opportunity, which flagship would you rather have? The new Galaxy S6? The extravagant S6 edge? What about the LG G4? Any HTC One M9 or Sony Xperia Z4 takers? The results started flowing in almost instantly.

As it turns out, however, we don't really have a clear favorite among our community. Indeed, out of the nearly 5,500 votes, three-fourths were pretty much evenly distributed between three devices, with the remaining fourth being split between two other.

At the ...

Samsung to invest the eye-watering $14 billion in a new chip foundry
5/7/2015 2:30:00 AM

Samsung's audit sheet already revealed the staggering amount of R&D spending - $13.8 billion - that the company invested in memory and processing chips, screen technology, and more last year. This is roughly three times Apple's research spending, but the company is not done, it seems. Samsung Electronics announced today that it will pour in the princely $14 billion in a new chip factory, which will be coming online as soon as the the first half of 2017.

The plant will be built in the city of Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, so that Samsung can keep a closer eye on production. ...

Image, specs, and price of an LG G4c leak out, it's a smaller, less powerful G4
5/7/2015 2:29:00 AM

"Mini" versions of flagships, with lesser hardware and a more affordable price tag, are nothing new, even though we haven't yet seen an HTC One M9 mini or Samsung Galaxy S6 mini. We won't be seeing an LG G4 mini, either, because that's not how the company rolls. Instead, it affixes a lowercase "s" at the end of the name to signify a phone's position as the budget option that takes after its flagship. So last year we had the LG G3 s. Now, however, it's looking like LG is going in a slightly different direction with a device called LG G4c.

We surmise as much from a number of new online ...

Sony Xperia C4
5/6/2015 8:52:00 AM

The Sony Xperia C4 is equipped with a front cam that's based around a 5MP sensor, a wide-angle (25mm wide) front camera lens, and a "soft" LED flash. Of course, this is a Sony phone, so not all the action is up front. The rear camera is a 13MP unit driven by Sony's own Exmor sensor. One-upping the newly announced Xperia Z4 by 0.3 inches, the Xperia C4 has a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS LCD display, complete with Sony's TV imaging technologies - Bravia engine and super vivid mode. The selfie phone doesn't compromise on design either, employing that beautiful glass and aluminum build. Sony didn't make this one water and dust-proof, but hey, at least the screen is scratch-resistant! On the hardware side, an octa-core 1.7GHz CPU (probably the MediaTek MT6752) runs the show, aided by an ARM Mali-T760 GPU and 2GB of RAM. A 2600mAh battery is crammed in, providing at least eight hours of video playback according to Sony.
