Revised Snapdragon 810 boasts performance and thermal improvements in Xiaomi Mi Note Pro benchmarks
5/6/2015 6:07:00 AM

It looks like a new twist to the Snapdragon 810's troubled story is about to form, leading to a happier outcome for Qualcomm's short-tempered SoC. Apparently, the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, which the Chinese vendor announced in January and launched in China today, has been outfitted with a revised version of the SoC that exhibits much better performance and thermal management than what we've seen so far.

Being referred to as the Snapdragon 810 v2.1, the chip scores an impressive 63,424 points in the AnTuTu benchmark, which is well above what competing SD 810-powered devices, the HTC One M9 and ...

Google to let app devs to A/B test their apps, price discrimination inevitable?
5/6/2015 5:35:00 AM

If you've ever sat through a semester's worth of Economics 101, the topic of price discrimination (or differentiation) likely came up at some point. In practice, such a pricing strategy simply means that the provider charges a different fee, depending on a number of factors, including region and demographics. Something along those lines may soon be possible on Google's Play Store.

According to developers who were told about such plans, cited by The Information, this new 'feature' will likely be announced at the upcoming Google I/O event, due to take place at the end of May in ...

Edge Contacts emulates Galaxy S6 edge's People Edge feature on the regular Galaxy S6, here's how to do it
5/6/2015 5:21:00 AM

As a rule of thumb in the world of Android, when a new feature debuts on a new device it only takes a while before someone emulates it for other devices, much to the delight of the regular users. That's why it comes to absolutely no surprise that two new phones that have already attracted large flocks of apt developers -- the hot-selling Galaxy S6 and S6 edge -- have already "exchanged" features.

In particular, if you are Galaxy S6 user who is envious of the People Edge feature that can be found on the S6 edge, you have a reason to rejoice! Said functionality can be now ...

Sony Xperia C4 announced - not the flagship you're waiting for, but an explosive selfie-phone
5/6/2015 5:02:00 AM

Following the success of last year's Sony Xperia C3, the Japanese tech titan is happily unveiling its successor, the Xperia C4. Sharing its name with gamers' favorite plastic explosive, the smartphone is equipped with a front cam that's based around a 5MP sensor, a wide-angle (25mm wide) front camera lens, and a "soft" LED flash. Of course, this is a Sony phone, so not all the action is up front. The rear camera is a 13MP unit driven by Sony's own Exmor sensor, which Apple has been gobbling up for one of the next iPhones.

One-upping the newly announced Xperia Z4 by 0.3 inches, the Xperia ...

Leakster claims some HTC One M9 batches have Gorilla Glass 3, not 4
5/6/2015 4:31:00 AM

According to Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, the 4th iteration of its product offers twice the protection of its predecessor, Gorilla Glass 3. Seeing how damaged, or even shattered, displays are a large enough issue for most people, double the protection sounds like a compelling reason to choose a device with Gorilla Glass 4.

The HTC One M9's 5-inch, 1080 x 1920 IPS display features Gorilla Glass 4, or so we were told. Serial leakster @upleaks, however, now claims that only some batches of the One M9 (and M9+) come with the latest edition, while others make do with ...

Spotlight: Grim Fandango Remastered waltzes onto Android & iOS
5/6/2015 4:09:00 AM

When we learned of Grim Fandango: Remastered's arrival on Android and iOS, we couldn't help but think "they don't make games like this one anymore". Back in 1998, when Grim launched on PC, most gamers preferred to distract themselves with things other than the game's opaque puzzles (*cough* Half-Life *cough*) and film-noir-about-the-dead narrative. But time has its strange ways, for Grim Fandango's rhythm of telling witty stories via exploration and puzzles jibes pretty well with the state of mobile gaming circa 2015. Now a beloved classic, it arrives on Android & iOS completely preserved, ...

Leaked images of the dirt-cheap Samsung Galaxy J1 indicate an imminent Verizon launch
5/6/2015 3:38:00 AM

While Samsung has finally put a stop to the smartphone release craze — which warranted dozens upon dozens of marginally different handsets for every region in past years — it still has a few gadgets up its sleeve. Sure, most of our attention has been fixed on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, or even the new mid-range A series, yet we can't fail to acknowledge another new member of the family: the Galaxy J1.

This dirt-cheap Samsung device ($135 in Europe, $115 in India) is nothing worth holding your breath for, as it features some pretty low-end hardware, including ...

In some countries, mobile searches now outnumber ones conducted on PCs
5/6/2015 12:45:00 AM

With the number of mobile searches now outnumbering searches being conduced on PCs in some countries, Google is looking to improve the quality of mobile ads. After all, that is Google's bread and butter. And since mobile screens don't offer too much real estate for ads containing many words, Google's ads will be more "pictorial," giving the answer to consumer questions about a product visually.

One way to accomplish this is to have a carousel of captioned images near the top of mobile search results,. Google gets paid every time some one clicks through to the advertiser's website. Instead ...

Motorola has a special maintenance update rolling out to the first generation Motorola Moto X, second generation Motorola Moto X, Nexus 6, Motorola DROID Turbo, Motorola Moto MAXX, Motorola DROID Ultra and the Motorola Moto X Pro. Apple's new streaming music service may not launch until after June
5/5/2015 10:10:00 PM

Apple's new streaming music service was supposed to be unveiled with the launch of iOS 8.4. The New York Times previously said that Apple would be introducing the new service on June 8th. Not coincidentally, that is the first date of this year's WWDC developer conference in San Francisco.

But a publication more focused on the music industry, Billboard, says that Apple might not have enough deals in place with talent and labels by the expected June introduction. Without having a number of well known singers and songs to sell the public on when the music streaming service launches, Apple is ...
