Alleged HTC monetization plan pops up: BlinkFeed might soon come with ads, auto-promotions
5/11/2015 4:27:00 AM

There's no denying that HTC is having a tough time on the market, as the One M9 apparently doesn't sell as good as the company had certainly hoped. There are numerous reasons for this, mainly the not-so-appealing aura that surrounds the new flagship and the pretty harsh competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung which are currently wildly successful on the market.

Well, it seems that HTC might have a new plan to score some additional cash. @upleaks, the fairly-popular leakster, recently revealed what seems to be a two-step monetization plan allegedly devised by HTC, according to ...

Once again, it is time for our weekly news round-up, where we put the most interesting stories from the past seven days for anyone who needs to catch up.

We can now rest assured that the platform's next major release is to be previewed at the Google I/O conference, which will take place in San Francisco on May 28 and 29. While details are still a bit unclear, we're expecting the so-called Android M to bring new proximity-based communication features, enhanced voice commands, improved Material Design, and more.

Poll results: Do you use the emoji pack of your phone's keyboard?
5/11/2015 3:32:00 AM

With the stock Android and iOS keyboards, as well as most third-party ones now featuring emoji - those little Japanese ideograms/smileys that are proliferating around the globe, we wanted to ask you how often do you actually use those funny characters to express emotions while chatting with or messaging someone.

Emoji packs are becoming a huge draw towards various third-party keyboards, and are very often the only paid aspect of those apps, along with various theming options. That's all fine and dandy, but, unless, you are a 12-year-old girl, or live in Asia, emojis, save for a smiley face ...

Do you own a smart wearable (smartwatch, smartband, etc)?
5/11/2015 3:25:00 AM

Smart warables — such as smartwatches — have now been on the market for a good two to three years, and manufacturers seem determined to keep at it for as long as necessary. This has already yielded some desired effects — we have at least two established platforms (Android Wear and Pebble OS), and a third one is about to be put to the test. We're, of course, referring to Apple's entry into the still niche market.

Whether you like Apple or not is irrelevant, for it lending its name to the form factor is nothing but good news for consumers and related businesses alike. Not only ...

Best new icon packs for Android (May 2015)
5/11/2015 3:23:00 AM

What's one of the easiest ways to breathe in new life in your phone's interface is by giving it an icon overhaul. There are already a great lot of totally awesome and beautiful icon packs for Android.

But this abundance of notable icon packs does not mean that a handful of noteworthy ones don't appear on Google Play each and every day - on the contrary, at least one collection of icons gets released each day. However, keeping tabs on all of these is quite a cumbersome task, even for those who are into such things.

This is why we regularly show you the ...

How to root Galaxy S6 with one click without tripping the KNOX counter (Verizon included)
5/11/2015 3:23:00 AM

Samsung's devices of late have been tricky to root not because they are with a restricted bootloader, or anything of the sorts, but rather because of KNOX - Samsung's enterprise-grade security software that comes preinstalled. So far, there hasn't been a reliable way to root the S6 without tripping this software's counter, and flagging it as such means that your warranty will be void. Samsung's after-sales service will read "KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0×1", and refuse to bother with your perceived drama.

Thankfully, when there is a will, there is a way, and ...

Swift Remote is an Android to desktop remote control app for the multimedia fanatics
5/11/2015 2:52:00 AM

Among the many things a smartphone can be, "desktop computer remote control" probably isn't the first to surface in your mind. Yet, thanks to the Swift Remote app, it can do that too, and do it mighty fine! Swift Remote connects (over Wi-Fi) to an application installed on your computer, and provides a simple interface to handle the tasks at hand. File sending is among the most convenient, as it greatly simplifies file transfers between Android and PC. Then, you get to the Remote Controls section, which is partitioned into Windows Controls, WMP Controls, Mouse Control, and Custom Commands.

Snapdragon 818 SoC with deca-core CPU being prepped by Qualcomm?
5/11/2015 1:40:00 AM

Last week, we told you about MediaTek's MT6797 SoC. This is part of the chipmaker's Helio X20 series, and features a deca-core CPU. The ten cores are set up with four ARM 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores, four 2GHz ARM Cortex-A57 cores and two 2.5GHz ARM Cortex-A72 cores. We did point out that the MT6797 has support for 993MHz LPDDR3 RAM and LTE Cat-6. This is behind Qualcomm and Samsung's support for 1600MHz LPDDR4 RAM and Qualcomm's support for LTE Cat-9.

Monday morning, some information leaked about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 818 SoC, which also will feature a deca-core CPU. This chip offers ...
