Did you know it has been more than two years since T-Mobile purchased MetroPCS?
5/4/2015 10:47:00 AM

Has it already been two years since T-Mobile purchased MetroPCS? The deal closed on May 1st, 2013. Since the acquisition, T-Mobile has become the nation's largest pre-paid carrier with 16 million customers. But the deal was done for more reasons than just adding pre-paid customers. Because more than 92% of MetroPCS subscribers have migrated to the T-Mobile network, the latter has been able to refarm 80% of Metro's network so it could be used on T-Mobile's pipeline.

When acquired by T-Mobile, MetroPCS had 6500 point-of-sale locations in 15 markets. Today, the pre-paid carrier is in 55 markets ...

Poll results: Which leather version of the LG G4 would you get?
5/4/2015 9:39:00 AM

The rear back cover of the LG G4 has seen a substantial makeover, as LG exchanged the smooth matte plastic of its predecessor for either a diamond-shaped plastic pattern with optional ceramic finish, or a novel genuine leather, complete with actual stitching in the middle.

Thus, LG opposes the glass & metal design trend of late by opting for an "analogue feel," which gives the smartphone a deliberate retro-chic character - genuine leather and all. LG's design decisions certainly won't fit every taste, and the LG G4 is the only Spring 2015 flagship phone whose ...

Spotlight: SlideME is a junk-free alternative to the Google Play app store
5/4/2015 9:37:00 AM

As an Android user, have you ever felt that Google Play has just too many freaking apps, and the overwhelming majority of these aren't very good at all? Having many apps is good, but wading through ten apps that do the same thing, just to find out that only one is actually worth your time while three are outdated, three are bloated beyond belief, and the rest is ad-riddled beyond good measure? That, frankly, sucks. SlideME, which is a well-kept, well looked-after third-party app store, wants to remedy these woes.

Those running the store manually inspect and review app submissions, ...

10 Mighty annoying Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge "features"
5/4/2015 9:35:00 AM

This will probably sound all too familiar: You buy a brand new phone, spend weeks fondling it lovingly, and only after that do you start picking up on some annoying "features" that are a thorn in your eye. Typically, these range from software imperfections down to hardware limitations that, for this or that reason, meant that your phone's power key had to be located at the top, outside of a thumb's reach. And this is just one example.

As you can imagine, the higher-end the device, the lower the chance of such annoyances. But that doesn't meant that flagship phones are, somehow, ...

Flash sale: Zenfone 2 with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage to be priced $337 for a day
5/4/2015 9:12:00 AM

The Asus Zenfone 2 was impressive enough for a $200 or so phone when it was announced earlier this year at the CES expo in Las Vegas, but when we learned that it will have a version with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage memory, it quickly became a handset to keep an eye on.

Well, now that the Zenfone 2, in all of its 5" and 5.5" screen reincarnations, has been on sale for a while, it's time to whip up the discounts, concluded Asus, and offered the flash sale you can see in the screenshot above. The 5.5" Zenfone 2, with model number ZE551ML, which ...

It's now easier to install custom ROMs or even different OSes on a slew of Sony smartphones
5/4/2015 9:11:00 AM

From the looks of it, Sony is quietly releasing a set of special bootloaders for a host of its devices that will make it easier making it way easier to flash custom firmwares or even different operating systems. Said bootloaders allow users to boot straight from the recovery partition of their devices.

Unfortunately, Sony has only released such bootloaders for a handful of its low-tier and mid-range devices: the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia T3, Xperia M2, as well as the Xperia E3. More popular flagship devices like the Xperia Z3 and previous flagship offerings from Sony are still unsupported, ...

Apple hogging up Sony camera sensor orders for the iPhone 6c, Sony struggling to meet demand?
5/4/2015 8:45:00 AM

Oh, Apple, what have you done? In a report from Chinese IT analyst firm Pan Jiutang, we get to learn that Cupertino's prime technological suspect has lined up so many Sony camera sensor orders, that Chinese smartphone makers are struggling to find supplies. Apparently, Sony can meet about half of the cam sensor demand by those growth-hungry Chinese smartphone makers, and the rest of its output is going towards a certain iPhone 6c, which is already showing up in rumor mill productions, by the way. Allegedly, the c-series iPhone will remain Apple's option for customers that prefer to handle a 4-inch ...

LG G4 battery life test: nothing's changed since the G3
5/4/2015 8:19:00 AM

The LG G4 is the most impressive flagship that the company has whipped up to date, with a bunch of "firsts" under its belt, like a tri-axis image stabilizer, color spectrum sensor, and a stitched genuine leather exterior option.

We took it for a spin over the weekend, and just released our review of the new LG flagship, basically determining that it lives up to the claims in the press release, and then some. It shoots some of the best photos you can obtain from a mobile phone (including in low-light conditions), offers a bright and ultra high-res display, ...

How to change vibration intensity, length, and pattern on the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 edge
5/4/2015 7:33:00 AM

Vibrator motors in phones as a concept is nothing new – even your decade-old Nokia featurephone – and they serve many purposes. The main one, undoubtedly, has to do with notifications: incoming calls, new text messages, or even a new like on Facebook! But not all phones have as much a say in terms of how that motor works as does the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

One of the most common complaints we seem to get when users unpack their brand new Galaxy flagship has to do with the strength – or intensity – the default setting is just too bothersome, even if ...

LG G4 Review
5/4/2015 7:24:00 AM

Introduction
Coming in second, third, or even fourth place in the Android smartphone space deserves adulation, mainly because there's just a vast collection of handset makers eagerly trying to snag a piece of the pie. However, when you're constantly being overshadowed by another company, the expectations to improve results and rise to the occasion become higher – almost making any sort of attempt be regarded as futile, unfortunately. That's the reality that LG has been facing for the last several years, as Samsung has been continuously managing to grab the lion's ...

How to enable Twitter's new Highlights feature on your Android phone
5/4/2015 7:20:00 AM

Twitter recently introduced a new push notifications feature called Highlights, which aims to deliver a short roundup of the most important tweets and trending topics from the accounts you follow, so that you don't have to sift through yourself. We know what you'd say - "ugh, push notifications" - but Highlights is actually pretty unintrusive, delivering a twice-a-day synopsis that has picked the essence of the never-ending Twitter action that can otherwise easily overwhelm your senses.

The thing is, though, that Twitter is pretty gentle with ...

Retinal scanner confirmed for the Vivo X5 Pro, company eyeing a May release
5/4/2015 6:38:00 AM

Unlike most brand name Chinese smartphones in the making, the Vivo X5 Pro rarely makes headlines. But when it does, it makes for a new element from a consistently interesting puzzle. Brought to you from the maker of the world's thinnest production smartphone right now, the X5 Pro has a front camera that's able to stitch together images into an interpolated 32MP self-portrait! Furthermore, Vivo has put together a rounded metal frame that's topped off with 2.5D curved glass, giving the X5 Pro a distinct appearance.

With a Snapdragon 615 SoC and 3GB of RAM, along with a 6-inch ...

LG gave the G4 to a professional photographer, here's what happened
5/4/2015 5:41:00 AM

When it comes to the camera, LG's new G4 flagship arrives packing. It features a wide F1.8 aperture, unique tri-axis optical image stabilization, full manual mode that lets you adjust even the shutter speed, and inventive focusing and light measurement systems like LaserAF and a color spectrum analyzer.

We are no spring chickens when it comes to manufacturers' claims, though, as marketing speak and an impressive specs list have all too often returned just average results when it comes to the camera. Тhat is why we were intrigued to learn that LG ...

Best new Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone games of April 2015

As usual, we take a look back at the very best new releases from the past month for the world's three biggest platforms. We have tried to cater to every taste including games in practically all genres, with only one condition: they had to be great.

April brought up a ...

No Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy Note II? Samsung Gulf believes so
5/4/2015 5:01:00 AM

Unlike most of Samsung's top phones, one of the former Galaxy Note flagships (2012's Galaxy Note II) has not yet received an Android 5.0 Lollipop software update. Despite the several claims that the device will eventually receive a refreshed TouchWiz interface with Lollipop on board, we now stumbled upon a contradictory statement, according to which the S Pen flaunting gladiator won't receive the sweet new take on Android. In a blog post on Facebook yesterday, Samsung Gulf, a branch of the giant that is operating in the Persian Gulf, clearly stated that the Galaxy Note II won't be receiving ...

Galaxy S6 shipping with two different camera sensors - from Sony or Samsung
5/4/2015 3:37:00 AM

Samsung has been known to use different sensors in one and the same model of its flagship lines before, and, seemingly, the Galaxy S6 won't be an exception. While we revealed not long ago that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are using a Sony IMX240 camera sensor, now another unit is elbowing its way into the picture, Samsung's own 16 MP creation.

This situation mimics what the company did with the Note 4 - the version with an Exynos processor of its latest phablet uses a Samsung-made sensor, reported as SLSI_S5K2P2, while the Snapdragon 805 variant is equipped with Sony's ...

Best new Android widgets (May 2015)
5/4/2015 3:17:00 AM

If you're a dedicated Android fan and not making full use of widgets, then you're totally not using the full potential of Google's platform. See, if we take away widgets out of the feature bag, we are easily stripping it from one of its defining features.

Certainly, a lot of widgets arrive on Google Play daily. Sifting the wheat from the chaff is pretty hard, even if you are a fan of customization. That's why we do the hard work for you and provide you with a curated selection of all the best new widgets that arrive on Android every two weeks or so.

This week is no different, as ...

What will Android 6.0 M be called? (poll results)
5/4/2015 2:55:00 AM

Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop. No, these aren't just the names of various delicious treats – they're also the names of each consecutive, major Android release after Alpha and Beta.

As we pointed out last week, these names aren't at all random. In fact, while Google is obviously fond of this sweet naming convention, it is also quite strict in the sense that the names are alphabetically ascending. So after Jelly Bean came KitKat, and after KitKat came Lollipop. Given this long-standing ...

Galaxy S6/S6 edge vs LG G4 vs HTC One M9 vs Sony Xperia Z4: Which one you'd rather have?
5/4/2015 2:26:00 AM

In Android world, the flagship scene has been set for the first half of 2015 – Samsung, LG, HTC, and (arguably) Sony have all now released, or announced the imminent release of, a new flagship. If you've been checking in with us these past two months, you likely know all about them already.

That would mean that you've already formed an opinion on them, too. In fact, you likely have a favorite – whether it's the Galaxy S6/S6 edge, the G4, the One M9, or even the Sony Xperia Z4. To be clear, that last one – the Z4 – was only tentatively ...

Two versions of the Oppo R7 are certified in China
5/4/2015 1:56:00 AM

Two versions of the Oppo R7 have been certified in China by TENAA. There is one model for China Telecom (R7c), and another model for China Mobile (R7t). The version of the phone for the former features a 64-bit octa-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon 615 CPU. The China Mobile model is powered by an octa-core 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6752. Outside of the different processors, both versions are basically the same.

The Oppo R7 features a 5-inch screen with resolution of 1080 x 1920, which works out to a pixel density of 441ppi. 3GB of RAM is inside along with 16GB of native storage. If additional memory is required, ...

Vivo X5Pro certified by TENAA; no glowing logo but other features are apparently on board
5/4/2015 12:03:00 AM

The Vivo X5Pro has plenty of smartphone fans excited for more reasons than just a glowing logo. Last week, we showed you a teaser from Vivo that hinted at a retina scanner for the handset. And the teaser also revealed that this scanner would be extremely secure, more so than a fingerprint scanner.

On Monday, the Vivo X5Pro was certified by TENAA, the Chinese equivalent to the FCC, and we have to tell you that the glowing logo was not on the phone that visited the agency. On the other hand, features teased by Vivo itself such as the retina scanner, a Type-C USB Port and the front-facing camera ...

How to increase the touchscreen sensitivity of your HTC One M9
5/3/2015 1:19:00 AM

The HTC One M9, true to its flagship status, is home to numerous features and functionalities, most of which are pretty useful. The Sense UI on board is certainly among those aftermarket Android interfaces that offer a great deal of features that are not in stock Android.

One of the new features that arrived along with Sense 7 UI, the latest rendition of the user interface, introduced a new feature - Glove mode. Under the fancy name hides a feature which is nothing else but improved touchscreen sensitivity for the display.

While it might take a ...
