Moto X 2013 expected to get Lollipop update in few weeks
5/11/2015 10:09:53 PM

Motorola has said that the first-generation Moto X, which was released back in 2013, should receive the Android Lollipop update in a few weeks. "I am glad to announce that we are starting TestDrive in both the US and LatAm. If all goes well we should start full deployments in a few weeks," said the company's senior director of software product management David Schuster. It's worth mentioning that the Lenovo-owned company has already announced that the device won't be getting Android 5.0, rather it will be updated directly from KitKat to Android 5.1. The news comes just a few weeks after Motorola started soak testing the Android 5.1 update for the device in Brazil. Source |...

Huawei Mate 8 phablet to sport QHD screen, 20MP camera
5/11/2015 3:09:56 PM

Huawei is already busy working on the successor to the Ascend Mate7 it launched last year. The upcoming phablet will be called just Mate 8, since the Chinese company is dropping the Ascend sub-brand this year. So far, we've seen the Mate 8 purportedly pictured in a few live images back in January (one of those pictures is reproduced to the left). And now, many months later, we finally get a rumored spec list for the device. The Mate 8 is supposedly going to come with QHD resolution for its touchscreen, which seems odd because the company's CEO once publicly bashed Xiaomi for using a QHD panel inside its Mi Note Pro. Perhaps in the meantime Richard Yu has realized the utility of higher-res displays. Moving on, the new phablet should also get a 20.7MP rear camera, made by Sony. At the helm we shall find the Kirin 930 chipset with octa-core CPU. The Mate 8 will keep the fingerprint scanner from its predecessor, along with the general design elements, all-metal construction, and Cat.6 LTE support. However, the display is said to be 'bezelless', continuing a nascent trend among Chinese smartphones (see the ZTE Nubia Z9, for example). Source (in Chinese) |...

Vivo X5Pro gets portrayed in some leaked renders of its own
5/11/2015 1:51:46 PM

The Meizu MX5 isn't the only upcoming Chinese smartphone to receive the leaked render treatment today. Joining it is the Vivo X5Pro, a handset that has been in the rumors a lot lately, and which will finally be announced this Wednesday, on May 13. Until then, though, it looks like someone in China simply couldn't wait, and decided to publish some renders showing the X5Pro in all its glory. Vivo X5Pro This is clearly going to be one of Vivo's most good looking phones to date, and as you can see it will be graced with some 2.5D glass on the front, which curves to meet the X5Pro's metal frame. More Vivo X5Pro renders The renders show us dual speakers placed on the bottom side of the device, with the USB port in between them. Past information revealed that the X5Pro should be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 chipset. It will run Vivo's Funtouch OS 2.1, based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. The screen has been rumored to be a 5.5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED unit, the rear camera will be 13 MP while the front snapper will be 5 MP (though capable of shooting 32 MP images through some software trickery). 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage should also be in, and the battery capacity could be either 3,500 or 4,150 mAh. Sony shows off the Xperia C4 Dual in promo video
5/11/2015 3:58:00 PM

Sony last week announced the Xperia C4, a new selfie smartphone that's ready to succeed the Xperia C3 from 2014. Before actually launching it (this will happen starting June), Sony is showcasing the Xperia C4 in a short promo video, so interested customers can take a quick look at its main features.

The video is showing the dual SIM version of the new handset, which is called Xperia C4 Dual, presenting its "anti-scratch and crisp" 5.5-inch 1080p display, the "5 MP smart social selfie camera" on the front, the 13 MP rear camera, the "elegant and ultra slim design", and so on. The new Xperia ...

LG G4 does have Quick Charge 2.0 capabilities
5/11/2015 3:39:00 PM

Since the LG G4 offers something not commonly seen these days in new smartphone models, a removable battery, it was assumed by most that the Snapdragon 808 SoC employed by LG did not offer the Quick Charge 2.0 feature found on other Snapdragon chipsets. In addition, LG has not promoted the feature at all. Considering how Samsung and Motorola have made a big deal about this capability on certain handsets, it is no surprise that there was this assumption that the LG G4 did not have Quick Charge 2.0.

But you know what they say happens when you assume something. So LG released a statement that ...

Windows Phone third party YouTube apps My Tube and Metro Tube receive updates
5/11/2015 1:53:00 PM

Windows Phone third party YouTube apps My Tube and Metro Tube both have received an update in the Windows Phone Store. Google and  Microsoft have not been able to see eye-to-eye on a way to allow a YouTube client to be made available for the platform. The most recent attempt made by Microsoft to build such an app resulted in it being blocked by Google. As a result, the two aforementioned Windows Phone apps have become quite popular.

MyTube has been updated to version 2.1.2.0. The new features include an ability to respond to comments (you might have to sign back into your account the ...

Motorola Droid Turbo is now cheaper than ever off contract
5/11/2015 1:17:00 PM

Launched by Verizon in October last year, the Motorola Droid Turbo was initially priced at $599.99 off contract - a price worthy of the handset's flagship status. Now, when the smartphone is more than 6 months old, Motorola and Verizon decided it was time to offer it for just $499.99 off contract. More exactly, $499.99 will get you a Droid Turbo 32 GB in black, red, or ballistic nylon (all these are also available for $99.99 on contract). As for the 64 GB version of the Droid Turbo (only available if you want the ballistic nylon model), this costs $549.99 off contract, or $149.99 on contract.

5/11/2015 12:35:00 PM

Some of AT&T's pre-paid GoPhone customers are going to be able to use the "Rollover Data" feature that the carrier offers to its postpaid Mobile Share Value customers. Existing GoPhone members will start the "Rollover Data" program on their first renewal after May 15th. Data that is rolled over must be used in the subsequent 30 day period or else it expires. Those signing up for the $60 plan receive 4GB ...

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is now being updated to Android Lollipop
5/11/2015 11:44:00 AM

Samsung already updated many of its recent smartphones to Android Lollipop, but most of them are high-end or mid-range devices. So we're pleasantly surprised to find out that the low-end Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is now also being updated to Lollipop.

The Lollipop update is currently available for the Galaxy Core Prime (model number SM-G360F) in Poland, and we guess it's going to be released in other regions pretty soon. Earlier this year, Verizon Wireless launched its own variant of the Galaxy Core Prime, and we hope this one will also get Lollipop.

As mentioned above, the Samsung ...

Meizu MX5 renders show another "bezel-less" screen
5/11/2015 11:08:00 AM

Last year, the Meizu MX4 topped the list of high scoring Android handsets that were run through the AnTuTu benchmark test. The average score of 47,765 for the device topped the Nexus 6's average score of 47,079. With the Meizu MX5 expected to launch some time this year, can Meizu's upcoming flagship live up to the achievement of its predecessor?

The Meizu MX5 is expected to feature a metal build with rounded corners. While we haven't seen new renders of the back of the unit, that is where the fingerprint scanner is said to be found. The phone will be driven by the 64-bit true octa-core MediaTek ...

Huawei Mate 8 to feature QHD screen, home grown Kirin 930 chip set and fingerprint scanner?
5/11/2015 10:17:00 AM

According to a recent Huawei roadmap which we passed along to you, the Huawei Mate 8 is expected to be unveiled next month. The latest word on the successor to the popular Huawei Mate 7 is that the new model will feature a similarly high screen-to-body ratio. The Mate 7 weighed in with a 78% ratio last year.

The 6-inch screen on the Mate 8 will get bumped to a 1440 x 2560 resolution, and Huawei will employ the home grown 64-bit Kirin 930 SoC with an octa-core CPU. The 20.7MP rear snapper will use the Sony IMX220 sensor and there will be a fingerprint scanner on the device. The phone will ...

Craving the Japan-only Sony Xperia Z4? Find solace in downloading the official wallpapers
5/11/2015 9:52:00 AM

Unless you reside in the delightful country of Japan, the Sony Xperia Z4 is only a distant dream, a mirage of past greatness, troubled present, and uncertain future. It also seems like a pretty good smartphone, even though it's such a faithful example of evolutionary design, it's as if Sony literally sent an intern to check up on what's considered flagship hardware in 2015, then stuck the spec sheet into last year's phone, and called it a day!

But hey, if that's what it takes to stay afloat on the Japanese market, then so be it. We've already been clued in that the rest ...

Sleek new Oppo R7 and Oppo R7 Plus shown in official press renders
5/11/2015 9:25:00 AM

Oppo might be a name that does not ring a bell to many people in the United States, and that's understandable - the Chinese company is focused on the Asian market. Nonetheless, its devices are definitely among the more interesting ones and will spur excitement among both techies for the innovations and regular people for the sleek, metallic design.

Now, the upcoming Oppo R7 and Oppo R7 Plus, the two flagship phones for the company in 2015 have appeared in their official glory. The company has posted the official images of the phones before their official unveiling ...

Protect the great - 10 LG G4 cases
5/11/2015 9:25:00 AM

Did you decide to pick up the LG G4? Well, congratulations, then - it's a really good smartphone! And the second best thing you can get alongside it is a case to protect it against drops, bumps, and scratches. Seriously, handling any phone, especially one as big as the LG G4, can be prone to the aforementioned incidents. And no one likes a scuffed or broken smartphone, especially when it's so nice, new, and shiny!

Then again, the G4 is a bit of special beast, as putting the genuine leather back version in a case feels incredibly... wrong. You want to see it and feel it, ...

5/11/2015 9:18:00 AM

AT&T today unveiled its first own-branded tablet, the Trek HD 4G LTE. This is an affordable slate that also happens to be AT&T's first to run Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

As its name suggests, the new AT&T tablet offers LTE connectivity, and an HD screen - an 8-inch one, to be exact. The device weighs 12 ounces (340 grams), and, according to AT&T, it's "a big step forward" for the carrier "in terms of developing affordable products with premium features."

Powered by a 1.6 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, the AT&T Star Trek HD has a 5 MP rear camera, ...

Vivo X5Pro renders leak showing bezel-less design and no glowing logo
5/11/2015 9:15:00 AM

Vivo is a China-based manufacturer, which may not be famous for super-powered flagship handsets, but does stay on track with the competition in terms of design. Last year, the Vivo X5 Max stole the crown for being the thinnest smartphone in the world, as certified by none other but the Guinness World Records.

The manufacturer's upcoming handset is dubbed Vivo X5Pro and rumors state that, while it will not break any records in terms of its thickness, it may just wow us with a 4,150 mAh battery – an impressive juicebox, considering that it will, presumably, not be sticked in a very thick body. ...

Benchmark test reveals specs for the Oppo R7 Plus
5/11/2015 9:01:00 AM

On May 20th, Oppo is expected to unveil the Oppo R7 and Oppo R7 Plus. Last week, we showed you a pair of commercials starring the pair, for the Chinese market. While we have had the opportunity to pass along information on the R7, specs for the larger R7 Plus have been hard to find. That is, until today when a GFXBench benchmark test allowed us to finally get an idea of what the "premium" version of the R7 will have in the way of hardware.

According to GFXBench, the Oppo R7 Plus will be equipped with a 5.9-inch, 1080 x 1920 resolution screen. The 64-bit true octa-core MediaTek MT6795 is ...

How to check how many battery cycles is your Apple iPhone 6 battery on
5/11/2015 8:42:00 AM

The Apple iPhone 6 features an 1810mAh battery that usually lasts throughout a full workday, but rarely much more than a full day, which means nightly recharging. Just like on most Apple devices, the battery inside the iPhone 6 is a Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) one, meaning that it degrades after time.

And if you are planning to buy a used or refurbished iPhone 6, you might want to know one crucial detail about the device: how long will its battery last?

Luckily, there is an easy way to track how much beating (or rather, charging) the battery has taken. That ...

Here's how to manage the quick toggles on your Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 edge
5/11/2015 8:17:00 AM

By now, probably most of you are aware that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge come with a renovated and toned-down iteration of TouchWiz UI. Indeed, numerous features that have been integral part of Samsung's UI for a long time went down the drain along with the new firmware that graces the flagships. In the meantime, TouchWiz UI became way more intuitive and user-friendly, which stands pretty high in our book.

Among those little improvements that make the user experience better and more user-friendly is the simplification of the quick settings panel. We can't say that we ...

HydrogenOS coming to China May 28th for OnePlus One
5/11/2015 8:15:00 AM

OnePlus, which released its Lollipop-tinged OxygenOS last month for the OnePlus One, is unveiling a version of the OS for the Chinese market under the name HydrogenOS. OnePlus was forced to create OxygenOS when Cyanogen, which originally powered the OnePlus One, entered into an exclusivity deal in India with Micromax. Originally Micromax pressed the issue and a court temporarily banned the OnePlus One in India. But Micromax recently withdrew the suit after OnePlus and Cyanogen formally ended their partnership.

Cyanogen said last week that it would continue to support the OnePlus One, which ...

Apple iPad Pro to ship next year with silver nanowire touch panel, sapphire glass?
5/11/2015 7:13:00 AM

The iPad front has been relatively quiet since the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 launched to a warm reception and a sluggish tablet market. The eventual iPad Pro, however, has been shaping itself into a handsome news topic, as evidence of its existence has been getting more and more substantial. Today, we get to learn that that Apple has been talking to its display suppliers — LG, JDI, and Samsung among others — about mass-producing AgNW-coated touch panels for the iPad Pro's display. AgNW stands for silver nano wire, a material for creating transparent conductive layers from single crystals of silver ...

Leaked Meizu MX5 renders show bezelless display
5/11/2015 12:16:41 PM

The Meizu MX5 is going to get official at a special event on June 30, according to some rumors from last week. It will get a metal construction, unlike all of its predecessors, and it's also going to come with a fingerprint sensor embedded in its Home button. Then again, perhaps the most anticipated detail about this smartphone is what it will look like, since so far we haven't seen it in any leaks. Well, today a couple of renders have surfaced in China claiming to accurately portray Meizu's next flagship offering. Meizu MX5 leaked renders As you can see from these images (click on the thumbnails for the full-size versions), the MX5 will be yet another handset to employ some kind of 'bezelless' tech for its screen. The display panel has virtually no lateral bezels, and this is something that's becoming quite a trend in China. The MX5 will be in select company in this respect - with the ZTE Nubia Z9, Oppo R7 Plus, and perhaps also the Vivo X5Pro. Past mumblings mentioned that the Meizu MX5 would be powered by MediaTek's MT6795 SoC, which boasts an octa-core CPU that can be clocked at up to 2.2 GHz. With regard to these renders, you shouldn't forget that they're still unconfirmed (even by other leaks), so it's entirely possible that they're not in fact showing us the next Meizu device. As we get closer to its unveiling date, things will surely get more clear. Source (in Chinese) |...

The next Moto X to bring a 16MP OIS camera
5/11/2015 11:10:50 AM

Over the years Motorola's flagship Moto X has proven to be quite popular, if not always very well selling. Two devices, bearing the name have already proven their worth and the rumor mill has been buzzing with hints of a third one well underway. A few days ago, some alleged specs for the device surfaced and today another source claims to have more info on the smartphone's camera. The phone's 16MP sensor might just be equipped with OIS. This hardly comes as a surprise, considering most current flagship devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the LG G4 take advantage of such technology for improved camera stability. Furthermore, this is not a new thing for Motorola either. The current Nexus 6 handset, doe, in fact, have optical image stabilization, so, including it in the Moto X (3rd Gen) should build on that experience. As for the rest of the device's specs, we currently believe that it is going to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, just like the one in the LG G4. It is yet to prove itself in real life performance, but it does promise a lot of number-crunching power in a heat-efficient package. The rest of the specs sheet includes 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage. The phone should be fitted with a 5.2-icnh QHD AMOLED panel, perhaps borrowed from the Motorola Droid Turbo. Other hardware includes a 5MP front camera and front-facing speakers and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box, all powered by a 3,280 mAh battery. Nothing is really official yet about the Moto X, so, the above should be taken with a pinch of salt. Source |...

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime gets the Lollipop treatment
5/11/2015 9:57:57 AM

Samsung is continuing its Lollipop expansion over its 2014 smartphones. The next in line to get the sweet firmware update is the Galaxy Core Prime, the SM-G360F model in particular. The first country to get the upgrade is Poland, but we expect other markets to follow suit shortly. The Galaxy Core Prime update is available over the air and via Kies. It brings Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS, the latest TouchWiz UX with Material Design and many interface improvements. The Core Prime update also includes updated Samsung default apps and repository, bug and security fixes, connectivity and performance improvements among others. If you can't wait for the update to reach your Galaxy Core Prime, you can try the Poland ROM from here. This can void your warranty though, so be careful! We hope Samsung expands the availability of the update to other versions and markets...

HTC One (M7) Dual SIM starts receiving lollipop update
5/11/2015 6:22:14 AM

The dual-SIM version of the HTC One (M7) smartphone, which was released in the August of 2013, has started receiving the Android Lollipop update in India. It is, however, not yet known if it's a global or region-specific roll-out. After applying the update, which is around 675MB in size, the device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, with software version 7.117.720.6. The roll-out comes just over a week after HTC revealed that the One Mini as well as the One Mini 2 won't be getting the update. It's also worth mentioning that the regular version of the M7 started receiving Lollipop back in March this year. Thanks Ravi John for the...

Alleged HTC monetization plan pops up: BlinkFeed might soon come with ads, auto-promotions
5/11/2015 4:27:00 AM

There's no denying that HTC is having a tough time on the market, as the One M9 apparently doesn't sell as good as the company had certainly hoped. There are numerous reasons for this, mainly the not-so-appealing aura that surrounds the new flagship and the pretty harsh competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung which are currently wildly successful on the market.

Well, it seems that HTC might have a new plan to score some additional cash. @upleaks, the fairly-popular leakster, recently revealed what seems to be a two-step monetization plan allegedly devised by HTC, according to ...

Once again, it is time for our weekly news round-up, where we put the most interesting stories from the past seven days for anyone who needs to catch up.

One of last week's top news shed some light on Android's roadmap. We can now rest assured that the platform's next major release is to be previewed at the Google I/O conference, which will take place in San Francisco on May 28 and 29. While details are still a bit unclear, we're expecting the so-called Android M to bring new proximity-based communication features, enhanced voice commands, improved Material Design, and more.

Poll results: Do you use the emoji pack of your phone's keyboard?
5/11/2015 3:32:00 AM

With the stock Android and iOS keyboards, as well as most third-party ones now featuring emoji - those little Japanese ideograms/smileys that are proliferating around the globe, we wanted to ask you how often do you actually use those funny characters to express emotions while chatting with or messaging someone.

Emoji packs are becoming a huge draw towards various third-party keyboards, and are very often the only paid aspect of those apps, along with various theming options. That's all fine and dandy, but, unless, you are a 12-year-old girl, or live in Asia, emojis, save for a smiley face ...

Do you own a smart wearable (smartwatch, smartband, etc)?
5/11/2015 3:25:00 AM

Smart warables — such as smartwatches — have now been on the market for a good two to three years, and manufacturers seem determined to keep at it for as long as necessary. This has already yielded some desired effects — we have at least two established platforms (Android Wear and Pebble OS), and a third one is about to be put to the test. We're, of course, referring to Apple's entry into the still niche market.

Whether you like Apple or not is irrelevant, for it lending its name to the form factor is nothing but good news for consumers and related businesses alike. Not only ...

Best new icon packs for Android (May 2015)
5/11/2015 3:23:00 AM

What's one of the easiest ways to breathe in new life in your phone's interface is by giving it an icon overhaul. There are already a great lot of totally awesome and beautiful icon packs for Android.

But this abundance of notable icon packs does not mean that a handful of noteworthy ones don't appear on Google Play each and every day - on the contrary, at least one collection of icons gets released each day. However, keeping tabs on all of these is quite a cumbersome task, even for those who are into such things.

This is why we regularly show you the ...

How to root Galaxy S6 with one click without tripping the KNOX counter (Verizon included)
5/11/2015 3:23:00 AM

Samsung's devices of late have been tricky to root not because they are with a restricted bootloader, or anything of the sorts, but rather because of KNOX - Samsung's enterprise-grade security software that comes preinstalled. So far, there hasn't been a reliable way to root the S6 without tripping this software's counter, and flagging it as such means that your warranty will be void. Samsung's after-sales service will read "KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0×1", and refuse to bother with your perceived drama.

Thankfully, when there is a will, there is a way, and ...

Swift Remote is an Android to desktop remote control app for the multimedia fanatics
5/11/2015 2:52:00 AM

Among the many things a smartphone can be, "desktop computer remote control" probably isn't the first to surface in your mind. Yet, thanks to the Swift Remote app, it can do that too, and do it mighty fine! Swift Remote connects (over Wi-Fi) to an application installed on your computer, and provides a simple interface to handle the tasks at hand. File sending is among the most convenient, as it greatly simplifies file transfers between Android and PC. Then, you get to the Remote Controls section, which is partitioned into Windows Controls, WMP Controls, Mouse Control, and Custom Commands.

Snapdragon 818 SoC with deca-core CPU being prepped by Qualcomm?
5/11/2015 1:40:00 AM

Last week, we told you about MediaTek's MT6797 SoC. This is part of the chipmaker's Helio X20 series, and features a deca-core CPU. The ten cores are set up with four ARM 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores, four 2GHz ARM Cortex-A57 cores and two 2.5GHz ARM Cortex-A72 cores. We did point out that the MT6797 has support for 993MHz LPDDR3 RAM and LTE Cat-6. This is behind Qualcomm and Samsung's support for 1600MHz LPDDR4 RAM and Qualcomm's support for LTE Cat-9.

Monday morning, some information leaked about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 818 SoC, which also will feature a deca-core CPU. This chip offers ...

Oppo R7 Plus officially confirmed to come with edge-to-edge screen
5/11/2015 4:34:44 AM

After months of teasing the development of its proprietary glass tech which creates the illusion of a bezelless display, Oppo went out and released official renders of the R7, where no such effect was observed.
