Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5
3/31/2015 6:05:00 AM

Introduction
What better way to determine how drastically Samsung's flagship phone line changed this year, than to lock horns between the Galaxy S6, and the 2014 darling Galaxy S5. Not only do we have a premium chassis (blasphemy!) on the S6, but this time Samsung also pulled out all stops in the specs department.

While last year the Galaxy S5 shipped with a 1080p display "only", this year the new S6 highlander comes equipped with a Quad HD panel, 3 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB, optical image stabilization for the camera, and a scorching fast chipset. Will these be enough to soothe the pain ...

Xiaomi announces the ultra-affordable Redmi 2A: a $96 dual-SIM LTE-enabled trooper
3/31/2015 4:59:00 AM

Earlier this month, we heard that China-based Xiaomi is about to commemorate its 5th birthday (which happens to be today, by the way) with a new device announcement, and it turns out that this is indeed the case. The so-called "Apple of China" just lifted the veil off of its newest device, the Redmi 2A, a toned-down variation of the recently-announced Redmi 2,which proudly joins the ranks of the affordable members of Xiaomi's entry-level range with its ultra-low starting price of 599 yuan (which is roughly $96).

Well, we shouldn't expect stellar hardware or ...

CPU Spy monitors your Android CPU states by the second, now with Material Design
3/31/2015 4:56:00 AM

CPU Spy is an older Android app built to monitor the time your device's CPU spends in each frequency state. Brandon Valosek, its developer, left the source code open, and before long, Guiseppe Baglio took it and transformed it into CPU Spy Plus - a killer beast of an app. He added deep sleep info, swipe gestures, the ability to reset/restore the CPU timers when the USB cable is plugged/unplugged, idle states info, and enough statistics to keep a statistics class busy for a semester.

Around the same time, Marko Dimartino made CPU Spy Reborn, which provided a very welcome ...

The annual Sony World Photography Awards 2015 has a mobile photography category this year for the first time, and the competition just wrapped up. Over 96,000 entries in 10 categories have been sifted through, and the winners, as well as the runner-ups were just announced.

The Sony Mobile Phone Awards had 20 finalists, but gave three images their blessing, out of more than 10,000 pic submissions, so the ones you see below are the cream of the crop in mobile photography, at least per the distinguished set of judges that are overseeing the competition.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge U.S. pre-orders double the amount tallied last year
3/31/2015 4:03:00 AM

According to a new rumor, the number of pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge in the U.S. are more than double the number of phones reserved in the states last year for the Samsung Galaxy S5. After the Samsung Galaxy S5 was met with a lukewarm response in 2014, Samsung reportedly started Project Zero to rebuild the flagship model from scratch.

Replacing the plastic build with a metal frame sandwiched by two pieces of Gorilla Glass, Samsung went for form over function. The removable battery cover is gone as is the microSD slot. But there are solutions to both. Samsung ...

Clone maker No.1 already working on a Galaxy S6 copy, here's how it'll look
3/31/2015 3:58:00 AM

Judging by a set of images courtesy of GizChina.es, Chinese clone-maker No.1 is already working on a Galaxy S6 copy, and we've got to admit, begrudgingly, that it's actually done a decent job. The photos in question show a device with a metal frame and identical layout for the various grills, buttons, and ornaments.

As can be expected, this Galaxy S6 clone will cost you a portion of what the real deal will command in terms of price, though there's no concrete figure to talk about at this point. From what the folks over at GizChina.es tell us, it's clear that the copycat ...

Sony reveals that Lollipop for the Xperia Z is also on the way
3/31/2015 3:46:00 AM

Sony may be the major manufacturer that came late to the Android 5.0 Lollipop party, but it seems that it will try to make up for the slowdown by updating quite a few of its handset models. A couple of weeks ago, the company started pushing the update to its most recent tops-shelf smartphones – the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact. Just a day after that started, the update also began rolling out to the Z2 Tablet, Z3 Tablet Compact, and the Xperia Z2 handset. Now, after a two-week silence, it seems that the next wave of devices are slowly going to become known.

Yesterday, Sony confirmed that ...

Sony tipped to have a 6-inch device in the making, wants to sell 38 million devices by April 2016
3/31/2015 3:04:00 AM

Despite the recently-circulating rumors that Sony might consider selling off its smartphone business, the Japan-based giant made it clear that it won't be leaving the smartphone market, much to the delight of all those that like its OmniBalance design language and all other features that make Sony smartphones stand out from the rest.

What's more, DiGiTimes reports that Sony is expecting to sell some 38 million devices in fiscal 2015, which is about to start on April 1 and end on March 31, 2016. This estimate is slightly lower than the 39.2 million units that the company ...

3/31/2015 2:23:00 AM

Now that the HTC One E9+ is official – but not before a lengthy leaks campaign first heralded its coming – it's time for us to shift our attention to another XL-sized HTC flagship supposedly in the making: the One M9+. Judging by the intensity of related leaks and rumors, the device in question is due for an announcement fairly soon, and today is case in point: new, high-res renders show us the One M9+ up close and in great detail.

Design-wise, the M9+ is a curious device. That is, it combines elements of both last year's One M8 and the more recent One M9 – we've got ...

Carrier coverage claims: What does covering "X-percentage" of Americans really mean?
3/31/2015 1:16:00 AM

When it comes to wireless service, there is a difference between coverage, and well, coverage. If there is any perceived weak point in the US wireless infrastructure, it could be argued that it is actual physical coverage, the ability to pick-up a carrier signal anywhere, anytime.

The United States is a large country, and believe it or not, the vast majority of the land mass is not developed. That makes providing any type of service that requires some type of infrastructure, wired or wireless, is a daunting task. That is why providers use carefully parsed marketing language like "service ...

These images reportedly show the new metal build of the unannounced Xiaomi MiPad 2
3/31/2015 12:35:00 AM

In India the other day, Xiaomi sold out two weeks worth of inventory for its Xiaomi MiPad tablet in just one hour. The tablet went back on sale yesterday in the country as inventories were re-stocked. Even though the tablet continues to sell well, there is speculation that the company is working on a sequel to the MiPad. A pair of pictures allegedly showing the second-gen Xiaomi tablet have leaked.

Looks wise, the MiPad 2 has a resemblance to the Xiaomi Note. Both share curved glass and a common placement of the front-facing camera and other sensors. The new iteration of Xiaomi's slab will ...

Your photos in Google+ will now show up in Google Drive
3/31/2015 12:32:00 AM

Google has some big plans for Photos, of that we have no doubt. What those plans are however are up for discussion. Long tied to Google+, Photos is expanding its horizons.

Recently, Google acquired a photo back-up and sharing platform called Odysee. Mountain View also shuffled some leadership with Google+ while separating Photos from the social medium in the process.

The first indicators of what some of the future looks like for Photos will be noticeable in Google Drive. Given all the pictures we take and share, Google is expanding where Photos can be accessed and shared. It is also ...

One month until Microsoft Build 2015: What to expect
3/30/2015 11:37:00 PM

So, it is quite possible you did not know this, but Microsoft's Build 2015 developer conference is just a month away. Registration quietly opened up (and sold out) in January, and the news out of Redmond has been rather controlled.

Granted, the belle of the ball will be Windows 10, and the converged nature of how developers can build once, and see their creations work across the form factors, desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

Details beyond that however are still largely up to the imagination. That does not mean we cannot discuss some practical realities the Windows platform is ...

WhatsApp update for Android enables Voice Calls
3/30/2015 11:04:00 PM

Up until today, if you wanted to use the voice call feature on the Android version of messaging app WhatsApp, you had to receive a call from someone who already had the feature. But we received a screenshot from one of our loyal readers today that revealed the result of an update to the Android version of the app.

As you can see, some changes have been made. Instead of the Chats and Contacts tabs, a third new option has been added. Titled "Calls," when that tab is opened, users tap on the new call icon at the top of the screen. That begins the process of making a call to a person on the ...
