Huawei's Kirin 930 flagship CPU uses enhanced Cortex A53e cores pushed to 2GHz clock speed
3/27/2015 7:34:00 AM

Huawei is making serious progress with its chipmaking business, coming up with more impressive in-house processors for its smartphones each year. The one that's en vogue for 2015 is the Kirin 930, an eight-core monster that's built on a 16nm process. Previously, the available information suggested that the K930 is based on stock ARM Cortex A53 and Cortex A57 cores, with the most recent reports surprisingly revealing an all-Cortex A53 octa-core configuration at the helm.

Predictably, some questioning ensued, as the A53 cores are low powered and play second fiddle to the ...

Mouse Kit keyboard and presenter app controls your Windows or Mac computer from afar
3/27/2015 5:59:00 AM

Able to control both Windows and Mac machines, Mouse Kit is one of the easiest ways to control your computer from afar from the comfort of your smartphone screen that is always by your side.

Why pay for expensive and limited in functionality set-top streaming boxes, when you can just hook up your laptop with a cheapo HDMI cable to the biggest screen in the house, and stream Popcorn movies there to your heart's desire. Well, that's not what the creators of Mouse Kit envisioned, but it's a good start to appreciate the app.

Mouse Kit lets you ...

LG eyeing end of April release date for the LG G4, analysts optimistic about its success
3/27/2015 5:45:00 AM

The Korea Herald reports that LG is eyeing an end-of-April launch date for its next flagship smartphone, the LG G4. This way, LG will have a timely response to arch-rival Samsung's competing products, shipping a high-end product about two weeks after the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge go on sale globally.

Reportedly, the LG G4 will have a sub 5.5-inch 1440x2560 display, and the device will have a slight curve for a more natural fit in the hand. If the (reasonably authentic looking) leaked photos below are anything to judge by, LG also modified the rear panel with a rugged texture ...

Apple reinvents packaging – patent shows new iDevices being personalized for use before they even leave the box
3/27/2015 5:13:00 AM

Apple has been granted a new patent recently and this one involves device packaging. Yes, weird topic to have a patent on, but apparently Cupertino wants to further improve the first-time user experience with its devices and reduce the initial setup time, which is needed for every new iGadget, to a minimum.

The patent describes a package, which either keeps a part of the new device out in the open, or keeps it covered, but in an unobtrusive way. This part is to be marked with a "tap here" marking and would require its new owner to tap their current device on the spot. At this point, a transfer ...

The Nubia Z9 Max crushes on AnTuTu's benchmark test, the Z9 mini – not so much
3/27/2015 4:33:00 AM

China-based ZTE held an event yesterday, where it announced two brand-new handsets for its Nubia line – the flagship phabled Nubia Z9 Max and its smaller counterpart – the Z9 mini. Both handsets are beautifully designed in a rectangular, "no-nonsense" shape, sporting premium glass-on-metal construction and both offer a hi-res camera experience with a 16 MP snapper on the back and an 8 MP one on the front. Under the hood, however, the Z9 Max is clearly the leader, as it is powered by Qualcomm's leading Snapdragon 810 SoC, coupled with 3 MB of RAM, while the Z9 mini bears the mid-range Snapdragon ...

HTC lead designer Jonah Becker abandons ship after a year on the job
3/27/2015 4:21:00 AM

For a place whose very air is permeated by wonderful design practices, HTC has some trouble holding its chief creative talent. HTC had to appoint a new lead designer for the second year in a row as former VP of Industrial Design Jonah Becker departed after a year on the job. Previously, Mr. Becker spent over six years in HTC after the company bought out his design firm One & Co and brought fellow design leaders Claude Zellweger and Scott Croyle on board.

To make a short recap, Becker became lead designer last April, as Croyle, former SVP of Design and User Experience at the time, announced ...

The 32GB Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 edge have 23GB of free space, so consider going 64GB
3/27/2015 3:32:00 AM

If you are looking up the Galaxy S6 / edge and storage space matters to you when shopping smartphones, you may want to consider getting the 64GB variant. Here's why - fresh out of the box, the 32GB version of the smartphone, which lacks a microSD card slot for storage expansion, has only 23.5GB of free space available to the user.

As much as TouchWiz grows simpler, it doesn't get any smaller in footprint, which means there's a realistic chance of the operating system growing even larger after a few updates. Combine that with the specifics of file system formatting, which ...

High-res HTC One E9+ renders leak out, show the device in its full glory
3/27/2015 3:13:00 AM

By now, it's become obvious that HTC is planning on releasing not one, but up to 4 fairly similar high-end devices to the market. We've got the One M9, of course, but also recurrent rumors and leaks relevant to still unreleased devices such as One M9+, One E9, and One E9+. As far as we can tell, HTC is keeping true to its previous branding efforts (One M8/E8), and the One E9 devices will be slightly less premium and skip on metal for their builds completely, or at least partially. This much seems likely, judging by the latest high-res renders of the One E9+ that we got our hands on just now.

As ...

Rumored specs for a new HTC tablet include 8.9-inch glass with 16MP rear camera
3/27/2015 2:18:00 AM

On April 8th, HTC is holding a media event and we could see quite a few devices unveiled including the HTC One M9+, the HTC One E9, HTC One E9+ and a brand new tablet. That's right, the rumor mill has tacked on a possible HTC tablet to the possible list of handsets rumored to be announced on that day.

According to the buzz around the water cooler, the new HTC slab will feature an 8.9-inch glass with resolution of 1530 x 2048. A 2.2GHz octa-core Allwinner H8 CPU (made using the 28nm process)  will be under the hood. The PowerVR SGX544 GPU will crunch the graphics. 2GB of RAM is on board ...

Pebble Time raises $20 million on Kickstarter with one more day to go
3/27/2015 1:36:00 AM

The first time Pebble tapped the crowd-funding market via Kickstarter, it raised $100,000 in the first four hours. It ended up raising an amazing $10.2 million and receiving orders for 85,000 units. The Pebble Watch has gone on to make a name for itself in the industry. For the fourth quarter of last year, Pebble finished second to Samsung with 700,000 timepieces shipped from October through December. That was topped only by the 1.2 million watches shipped by Samsung.

But here is something even more amazing to chew on. The Pebble sequel, known as Pebble Time, has raised $20 million on Kickstarter. ...

Voice calling on WhatsApp just weeks away for iOS users
3/27/2015 12:22:00 AM

At Facebook's F8 developer conference on Thursday, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton made it clear that the feature allowing live phone calls to be made from the app will be offered to iOS users in a matter of weeks. Acon said that WhatsApp spent the last year getting the feature ready to run on Android. Now that the platform supports WhatsApp calls, iOS is next.

We can't say that all Android users are ecstatic about WhatsApp's calling capabilities. After all, you need to get invited by a fellow Android user in order to make calls using the app, unless you have root access. In that case, ...
