T-Mobile's new coverage map is based on customers' real life experiences
3/30/2015 6:58:00 PM

T-Mobile introduced a new coverage map today that is based on "real-time customer experience." The carrier says that the map is comprised of more than 200 million data points reported by T-Mobile customers. This data replaces the previous estimates that the mobile operator employed in producing its coverage map.

The map reveals exactly where T-Mobile customers will find 4G LTE, 4G and 3G coverage. Certain parts of the map show a "Verified Coverage" icon that points out areas of the U.S. where the majority of the data provided comes from T-Mobile subscribers. These customers are relaying ...

Microsoft taking aim at Google's Chromebook with a Windows 10-based laptop that will cost just $149
3/30/2015 6:27:00 PM

Chromebooks have been a selective hit, mostly due to their very low price points (Chromebook Pixel notwithstanding).

Of course, given that these are ostensibly low-cost laptop designs armed with a light OS interface where all the "apps" operate via a browser, there is not much there to inflate the cost very much. The trade-off is that to get the most out of a Chromebook, a user needs to be connected to the internet much of the time.

Coupled with some of the features that Google's free services lack when compared to what would be a Microsoft Office counterpart, it is understandable ...

Picture allegedly showing off the casing of the Apple iPad Pro shows off second connector port
3/30/2015 5:37:00 PM

Apple is allegedly hard at work building a 12.9-inch tablet that could be named the Apple iPad Pro or the Apple iPad Plus. We have seen a number of leaked images showing third party cases for the tablet, and other photos that showed the alleged casing for the slate. Today, some new pictures were discovered on Chinese social media site Weibo, showing off a number of items including one of four speaker grills expected on the tablet.

The picture also reveals what appears to be a second connector on the left side of the tablet. This would allow the iPad Pro to be plugged in even if standing ...

Fun dates to look forward to: April 1st and May 4th
3/30/2015 5:31:00 PM

Reading and reporting about the mobile technology industry is fun. The whole industry is fiercely competitive, but because it is also such a creative sector, a lot of folks know when to not take themselves too seriously and have some fun.

April Fool's Day is just such an occasion to drive the media mad, and entertain the fans. In fact, you can count a lot of the news that day to be dominated by jokesters to one degree.

We do not know what, or if, the tech wizards at Google, Sony, or any one of dozens of other companies are planning to put forth in the name of a good laugh. Motorola ...

Verizon's LG G2 receives Android 5.0 via an OTA update
3/30/2015 3:32:00 PM

For Verizon customers sporting the LG G2, today is a day that they have been dreaming about for some time. Android 5.0 is now on the way to the handset via an OTA update and changes the GUI so that it follows the LG G3 and the Material Design look of Android 5.0. The Notification panel will require a single swipe up to display Notifications and Quick Settings at a single time. Swiping up again will dismiss Quick Settings, leaving the Notifications on the screen.

Other changes include Lock Screen notifications, and the new "Recent Apps" menu which includes Screen Pinning. The latter prevents ...

New Samsung infographic shows the differences between the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S5
3/30/2015 1:58:00 PM

Samsung wants to make sure that you know the differences between its former flagship smartphone - the Galaxy S5 - and the brand new Galaxy S6, which will be launched around the world starting the first half of April. Thus, the company today posted a Galaxy S6 vs. Galaxy S5 infographic on its official blog.

Obviously, the Galaxy S6 bests the S5 in all departments presented in the infographic. However, what Samsung doesn't show is that, unlike the Galaxy S6, the S5 is water-resistant, and has a microSD card slot (these being two features that would have arguably made the S6 even better). ...

Customize your HTC One M9 with the new HTC THEMES website
3/30/2015 1:49:00 PM

One of the new features available on the HTC One M9 allows you to customize the handset using themes that you create yourself. To make it easier to create different themes, HTC is offering a website aptly named HTC THEMES. The site allows you to choose different wallpaper for the lock screen, home screen, messaging app, the app drawer and DotView. Once that is done, you can select from various colors, icons and fonts. You can even use the website to select your ringtones and notification sounds.

You can also select from themes created by other people. Some of these will require a purchase, ...

Apple Stores now accept non-iPhone handsets as a trade toward the purchase of certain iPhone models
3/30/2015 12:09:00 PM

Earlier this month, we told you that Apple was working on a way to allow consumers to trade in phones made by rival manufacturers, and use the proceeds of such a trade toward the purchase of a new iPhone. This morning, we can tell you that Apple has completed the training of its personnel, and is launching the program today.

Certain Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry handsets can be used as a trade-in toward the purchase of an Apple iPhone 5c, Apple iPhone 6 or Apple iPhone 6 Plus. The Apple Watch cannot be purchased with this plan. The devices being accepted by Apple include models like ...

See how Oppo brutally tortures its smartphones before shipping them to the masses
3/30/2015 10:04:00 AM

Enjoying yourselves with those Samsung Galaxy S6 edge hack and smash videos? Sure you do! Here's one from Chinese smartphone innovator Oppo. Now, unlike the raw, exploitative footage of the Galaxy S6 edge getting smacked around, what we're seeing here is fully controlled smartphone destruction in a laboratory setting. The official video by Oppo shows how the manufacturers tests its devices as per standard procedure that's part of the production process.

For starters, Oppo puts its smartphones against 55 pounds (25 kilos) of pressure, then drops them onto marble from about ...

Sony Xperia Z4 benchmark run spills the beans: 5.1" display, Snapdragon 810, and 20MP camera
3/30/2015 9:53:00 AM

Literally minutes after we were tipped off to the existence of an LG G4 benchmark pass through GFXBench, we now received word that the other major flagship in the making, the Sony Xperia Z4, has suffered a similar fate.

According to the listing, a device code-named Sony E6553, quite likely the Xperia Z4 (more on why later), ran GFXBench's suite of tests, revealing quite a bit about itself. For starters, Sony seems unwilling to jump on the display resolution bandwagon, and is sticking to a 5.1-inch display with a standard, 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution. Underneath the panel, ...

Sony will update the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra to Android 5.0 Lollipop
3/30/2015 9:38:00 AM

Earlier this month, Sony suggested that only its Xperia Z devices would be updated to Android Lollipop, without saying anything about handsets like the Xperia E3, Xperia C3, Xperia M2, Xperia T3, Xperia T2 Ultra, and so on. Fortunately, some of these smartphones will get Lollipop after all.

Sony today confirmed that the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra would be updated to Android 5.0, though for now it can't give us exact release dates. Available since last year, both the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra are mid-range devices that feature Snapdragon 400 processors and 1 GB of RAM, so we are hoping ...

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge vs Samsung Galaxy S5
3/30/2015 9:27:00 AM

Introduction
Samsung simultaneously outed two flagships this year – the regular Galaxy S6, and a uniquely designed handset that has its screen sloping on both sides – the Galaxy S6 edge. As customers will be mostly divided between the regular S6 and the S6 edge this year, we find another important decision some consumers will likely face: the Galaxy S6 edge or last year's Galaxy S5, which is still a superb phone, now at a more alluring price point.

There are many things that make the new Galaxy S6 edge highly desirable by tech heads, such as its impressive Quad HD display, or the new, ...

iPhone tutorial: How to change your SIM PIN to something you will remember, or turn off SIM PIN lock
3/30/2015 9:22:00 AM

Out of the many security features that our mobile devices usually tote, having to enter your SIM PIN unlock code upon every phone boot is probably the most annoying, and often – troublesome. Now, don't get us wrong, having our card safely locked is awesome, but on rare occasions, this little thing can backfire, while on others – it puts a slight barrier between a phone's reboot and it being back in an active state, which could get annoying.

"But who restarts their phone so often?" you may ask. Well, indeed, the fact that we rarely reboot our devices is where the ...

3/30/2015 9:17:00 AM

The LG G4 has been on our minds for a while now, and with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge now a reality, it's only sharing that mental space with the also unreleased Sony Xperia Z4. Word on the street is that we'll get to see an LG exec unveiling the thing in a month's time, but until then we're on our own, and that means leaks and rumors. Thankfully, today just got a whole lot better in terms of that.

A device named LG G4 (F500x) has been caught passing through GFXBench's suite, spilling the beans in terms of hardware specifications. According to the details the benchmark ...

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Apple iPhone 6
3/30/2015 8:34:00 AM

IntroductionThe Samsung Galaxy S6 or the Apple iPhone 6: like it or not, this is the big question for smartphone buyers in 2015.
After Apple upped the ante by finally releasing a large-screen iPhone, and one that is shockingly slim and stylish at that, Samsung has come back strong with a comprehensive overhaul of its Galaxy S. Gone is the cheapo plastic in the S series: coming to replace it is a toughened glass on both the front and the back, and a sturdy metal frame - a construction that has to take on the solid all-metal iPhone 6.

The rest is a battle of differences: the Galaxy S6 against ...

Samsung will make creating and sharing original Galaxy S6 themes possible in April
3/30/2015 8:34:00 AM

TouchWiz's extended theming capabilities became a notable highlight of the new Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 edge's feature set. However, Sam's latest and greatest smartphones aren't the first to feature some solid theming functionality. In fact, our Korean friends introduced the Themes option in its mid-range Galaxy A series before bringing it aboard its high-end offerings. Presently, users can choose between four pre-installed themes and download some more from a theme marketplace, but so far, rolling your own theme hasn't been an option - at least by official means. As of today, the MyTheme theme ...

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4
3/30/2015 8:12:00 AM

Introduction
Until recently, getting the best Android smartphone Samsung could offer was a straightforward process involving no more than three simple steps. Step one was to get a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Steps two and three were to settle the bill and to brag about your new handset on social media. Now, however, the highly-anticipated Galaxy S6 is about to hit the shelves worldwide. This changes things quite a bit as Samsung's new flagship is no less awesome of a smartphone when stacked up against the Note 4. That's why we don't want to be in the shoes of someone torn between these two Galaxies. ...

Galaxy S6 edge drop, water and nutcracker tests show stellar durability
3/30/2015 8:02:00 AM

Samsung used plastic, instead of glass substrate for the flexible AMOLED display of the Galaxy S6 edge, so it can bend it on both sides, forming the notorious dual edge that makes it so unique. The side-sloping display functions might be more for bragging rights than practical purposes, but there is no denying that the new flagship might turn out to be one of the most drop-durable handsets out there, judging from the tests below.

The phone survives a fall from shoulder height, but that's not all there is to it. We don't know to what extent this ruggedness is due to the ...
