Leaked roadmap shows Meizu's plans for Lollipop updates
3/23/2015 12:41:32 PM
A purported leaked roadmap showing Meizu's plans for updating its devices to Android Lollipop has surfaced in China today. And it's all good news if you own a flagship device made by the Chinese company. According to this leak, Meizu plans to bring the latest version of Android to at least five of its handsets, namely the MX4 Pro (pictured to the left), MX4, MX3, MX2, and M1. This is quite something, when you consider that the MX2 was released back in 2012. Regarding the affordable M1, keep in mind that this designation could refer to the M1 series, meaning both the M1 and the M1 Note - since they were outed within weeks of each other. As for the actual schedule, the MX4 Pro and MX4 could be blessed with Lollipop around April 28. The MX3 and MX2 should get their taste in May, while M1 owners will have to wait until June for their treat. Obviously this isn't official, so things might still change. On one hand, it's good to see phones from 2012 running the latest version of Android, yet on the other hand by June Lollipop will have been out for around eight months already - so maybe in the future Meizu can also work on how fast it delivers such updates. Lenovo K3 Note is a new 5.5-inch midranger for $145
3/23/2015 11:18:40 AM
We wrote a while ago about Lenovo's scheduled press event on March 23, expecting to see the new company flagship. Well, the date has come and Vibe Z3 Pro remains elusive. Instead, Lenovo chose to unveil an affordable midrange phablet, targeted squarely at the Meizu m1 note. The new smartphone is called Lenovo K3 Note, and its a larger, better-equipped version of the existing Lenovo K3. Lenovo K3 Note The Lenovo K3 Note comes with a 5.5-inch FullHD display and rocks a fresh yellow paintjob with a distinctive circular bump on the back - purely a design element. The smartphone is powered by a 64-bit Mediatek MT6752 chipset, and an octa-core processor ticks inside at 1.7GHz. 2GB of RAM are on board and internal storage is 16GB, expandable by up to 32GB via microSD. A 13MP camera sits on the back, coupled with a dual-tone LED flash, while a 5MP front snapper take care of selfies. The Lenovo K3 Note comes with dual-SIM dual-standby capability and SIM1 supports 2G/3G and LTE, while the second slot is GSM-only. The engineers have managed to fit a 3,000mAh battery in a body just 7.6mm thin, while weight has been kept at around 150g. The smartphone gets a list price of CNY899 (~$145) for the regular version and CNY999 (~$160) for the Teana called option. The CNY100 premium is justified by a special "ceramic piece vibration speaker", which supposedly pumps out more decibels. Meanwhile, the 16GB version of the similarly specced Meizu m1 note retails at CNY1,099, so the Lenovo K3 Note is a pretty attractive...

Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos pops up in Russian online store
3/23/2015 10:35:06 AM
The eagerly-anticipated Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are set to hit stores in April and after a record number of preorders, it seems neither users, nor retailers can wait to finally get their hands on Samsung's latest flagship devices. And while we think we already have a pretty nice idea of what to expect in terms of pricing for the devices in different markets, a Russian retailer, recently threw a major curve ball on the scene by listing a Duos version of the Galaxy S6 in its online store. While the dual-SIM version is not unheard of, this is only the second time we have seen in priced and this time it's in an actual listing. According to the source, the Galaxy phones will hit the Russian market starting April 16. The 32GB Galaxy S6 is priced at RUB 49,999, or about $843 and the 64GB dual-SIM model will set you back RUB 52,990, or about $893. The S6 edge is even steeper at 54,990, or about $927. Source |...

3/23/2015 9:17:49 AM
Samsung has started rolling out the Lollipop update for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, which was released back in July last year. HTC One M9+ measurements reveal the cost of a 5.2" screen
3/23/2015 8:32:16 AM
HTC left the One M9 alone to bathe in limelight of the MWC, but it has a second slightly bigger device on the way. The HTC One M9+ will have a 5.2" screen allegedly and all indications are that it will be HTC's first QHD display (1,440 x 2,560px). The One series hasn't had the slimmest bezels recently and in seems that the One M9+ will not be a tiny device either. The handset is rumored to measure 150.9 x 72.5 x 10.2mm, compared to 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.6mm for the base One M9. Another comparison will be with the LG G2 and it's 5.2" screen, the tiny bezels around it make it only 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9mm. Of course, it doesn't have stereo speakers on the front, which do add some bulk. The Sony Xperia Z3 (also 5.2" screen and stereo speakers) is 146 x 72 x 7.3mm. The HTC One M9+ rumors also promise a fingerprint reader, though leaked photos doesn't show any such thing on the back, so that probably also goes on the front. Other specs include a MediaTek MT6795 or Snapdragon 810 chipset (region dependent), 3GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage and the same 20MP camera as the regular One...

Photos show Oppo bezelless display in the flesh
3/23/2015 7:49:42 AM
Just a few hours ago, we received an exclusive tip about Oppo's new display technology which visually eliminated the display bezel. It does so by the use of clever light diffraction, which makes it seems like the display panel extends further sideways than it actually does. The information we received earlier was of a filed patent and today we found a couple of live photos that seems to show the clever new display technology in an actual device. Now, as far as we can tell, the two shots look real enough and the promised visual effect is definitely there. The accompanying text talks about a 5.5-inch screen size and also mentions that the technology is similar the one used in the Sharp Aquos Crystal. Looking closer at the first shot, the one in "mid-swipe", it does seem that the numbers and symbols are slightly distorted once they reach the edge of the display, where the illusion takes place. This might simply be due to the change in surface angle or maybe the photo is slightly out of focus. There are some concerns around the technology and how it affects image quality and clarity toward the edges, but it is too early to comment on the matter and the photos are not really enough to go by. Hopefully, the new technology will allow the manufacturing of edge-to edge screen devices in a cost-efficient manner, so we can see such screens on mid-rangers and even budget phones in the future. As we mentioned in the previous article, the patent is already granted and should be available online within three to six months, so it would be fair to assume, that we might start seeing it employed in actual devices after that. The unit in both photos looks pretty generic and mostly resembles the Oppo R5, as far as the company's current lineup goes. This, of course, might simply be a coincidence, but it could also signify that the R-lineup will be the first to receive a model with the new screen technology. What do you think of the photos? Do you think they might contain "traces of Photoshop" and are you excited about what Oppo is developing in general? Source (in...

Lollipop update for Sony Xperia T2 Ultra gets certification
3/23/2015 7:00:21 AM
A tweet from @SonyXperia broke many hearts when it claimed that only Sony's premium Xperia Z line will get updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. A Bluetooth certification labeled "Tianchi Update to L" shows this might not actually be the case. "Tianchi" was the codename for the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra and "L" should be pretty easy to guess - until Google reveal the official treat, Android 5.0 was known just as "L." The certification itself was granted on March 11 and the results listed a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, this is where the duties of the Bluetooth SIG end, there's no indication when the update may be released. This is subject to making sure the software works and collaborating with carriers to push out the update. The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra launched on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean then got updated to 4.4.2 KitKat (and 4.4.3 after that). Source |...

Sailfish OS alpha is out for the OnePlus One
3/23/2015 6:12:35 AM
Jolla outed an alpha version of Sailfish OS for the OnePlus One. Sailfish OS was spotted running on the phone in the beginning of the month, but now you can run it as well. Since this is an alpha, some crucial functionality is missing such as Wi-Fi connectivity and the camera app isn't operational. Additionally, support for Android App installs isn't available as well as OTA updates. If you want to see the alpha ROM run on a OnePlus One unit before attempting to flash it on your own, here's a video. Follow the second link below to check out the list of instructions if you want to try the Sailfish OS on your OnePlus One. Source |...

Huawei P8 dimensions revealed in factory schematic
3/23/2015 5:25:29 AM
The Huawei P8 should be unveiled on April 15, but details about the new flagship are continuing to trickle in. The latest are alleged photos from the factory that is working on the P8 and show a book of schematics with the exact measurements of the handset. The Huawei Ascend P6, P8's granddad, was well-known for being super thin - 6.2mm in 2013. Its successor went up to 6.5mm last year and the new model is set to be 6.6mm thick according to these drawings. The exact dimensions are 144.9 x 71.9 x 6.6mm, compared to the 138.8 x 68.8 x 6.5mm of the Ascend P7. The Huawei P8 will have a bigger screen than its predecessor - 5.2" vs. 5" - accounting for the taller and wider device. Current rumored info points to a 2,600mAh battery, a small upgrade from the previous 2,500mAh battery, too. Huawei P8 schematic There are a number of changes on the back, including dual-LED flash for the single 13MP camera (no dual-camera like some early rumors suggested). Below that is a wide rectangle whose purpose is unknown but could be a fingerprint scanner like on the Ascend Mate7. The loudspeaker has moved from its traditional place on the back and is now on the bottom. There are two strings of holes on the bottom, it's not clear if there's a speaker behind each or if one is just decorative. The Huawei P8 should keep the screen resolution at 1080p (Huawei's CEO thinks QHD on phones is just a waste of battery). The phone will be powered by the new in-house Kirin 930 chipset (also found on the MediaPad X2 tablet) and will be paired with 3GB of RAM. Source (in French) |...

OPPO Find 7 bundle gets a €200 price cut
3/23/2015 4:40:55 AM
One of first smartphones to come with a QHD screen, the Oppo Find 7, which was announced a full year ago, is now receiving a major price cut. While the handset alone will still set you back €479, a more compelling offer is now available, with a comprehensive bundle of accessories for €429. For €50 less you are getting a 32GB Sandisk Ultra microSD card, a screen protector, an additional back cover and an Easy Cover windowed flip case. Not only that, but an iLike Bluetooth headset is included, itself costing €59 alone. A year later, the Oppo Find 7 is still relevant, as it's powered by a Snapdragon 801 chipset and packs 3GB of RAM. The 1,440 x 2,560 pixel resolution delivers stellar 538ppi density, and we're still seeing flagships launched with 1080p resolution, the case in point being the HTC One M9. On the other hand, if 1080p is good enough for you, you can always opt for the Find 7a, which is otherwise almost identical save for the 2GB of RAM and half the storage at 16GB. Bundled with the same accessories, it is now on offer for €349. It's unclear whether the price cut will remain until the launch of a yet to be announced successor, or will be a limited time offer. So, if the Find 7 is on your shortlist, you might be wise to head on to Oppo's web store and take advantage while you...

Check out the new phones and tablets of the week
3/22/2015 5:45:13 PM
Understandably, the aftermath of MWC 2015 hasn't seem much new hardware. It is only natural that the event exhausted manufacturers, so we haven't really been getting a lot of device announcement lately. This week, however, there has been some new and interesting announcements for us. First up, is the Microsoft Lumia 430 Dual SIM. The small Windows Phone device is Microsoft's latest effort to captivate low-end markets, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. It is powered by a rather outdated Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 chipset with 1.2 GHz with 1GB of RAM and has a rather small 4-inch 800x480 pixels display. On the plus side, the Lumia 430 Dual SIM will retail for the price of $70 and you really can't ask for more with that budget. Samsung also had a few devices to show off during the past few days. There is the new budget Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 V tablet. It offers a 7-inch WSVGA display and is powered by a Spreadtrum chipset with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and a single gig of RAM. Price is around $135, which is definitely a good deal for the hardware. Joining it, are two other tablets - the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 and Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7. As their names, suggest, they are mostly identical, except for the screen size. Both offer a slight improvement over the previous model in terms of hardware and should be available for purchase sometime this April. HTC had a new phone to show as well - Desire 820s dual sim. It also made the round a few days ago and is essentially a Mediatek variant of the standard Desire 820. Last, but not least, there is a tablet curtsey of Acer. It is available in a rather confusing range of hardware variants and is essentially a mid-range offer. .news-item .n-left { float: left; width: 26%; text-align: center; } .news-item .n-right { float: left; width: 74%; } .news-item a { padding-bottom: 0; padding-left: 0; } .news-item .n-right h2, .reviews-item .n-right h2 { clear: both; padding: 0 0 3px 0px; font: 400 19px Oswald, Arial; margin-top: -4px; } .n-right p { margin-top: 25px; line-height: 155%; } .news-item { padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; border-top: 1px solid #ccc; } .news-item p { margin-left: 0; } .n-right h2 .phone-name { display: inline-block; width: 252px; overflow: hidden; vertical-align: text-bottom; } .n-right h2 a { text-decoration: none; color: #000; } .flat-button{ text-align:center; text-decoration: none !important; font: 400 22px Oswald,Arial !important; //font-family: sans-serif; -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; font-size: 150%; //background: #0CADA7; padding: 20px 60px !important; display: inline-block; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-border-radius: 5px; -moz-border-radius: 5px; border-radius: 5px; margin: 10px 0; -webkit-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -ms-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -moz-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -o-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; color: #fff !important; } .flat-button-1 { background: #0CADA7; } .flat-button-1:hover { background: #0A948F; color: #666666 !important; } .flat-button-2 { background: #FF7E47; } .flat-button-2:hover { background: #EE7440; color: #666666 !important; } .n-right .rank-info { display: inline-block; font-family: "Oswald",Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: 100; } .n-right .rank-info .current-rank { font-size: 23px; } .circle { background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #8fb28f; border-radius: 50%; height: 23px; width: 23px; display: inline-block; margin: 0px 10px -1px 10px; } .arrow { width: 0; height: 0; border-style: solid; display: inline-block; margin: 0px 10px -1px 10px; } .arrow-up { border-width: 0 15px 25px 15px; border-color: transparent transparent #0cada7 transparent; } .arrow-down { border-width: 25px 15px 0 15px; border-color: #ff7e47 transparent transparent transparent; } Microsoft Lumia 430 Dual SIM specs gallery Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 V specs Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 specs Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7 specs HTC Desire 820s dual...

Exclusive: Leaked Oppo patent reveals bezelless screen tech
3/22/2015 12:33:55 PM
Curved displays seems to be the craze right now and even more so, after Samsung set the tone with the Galaxy Note edge. But even though curved display panels definitely sound like a formidable technical challenge and undoubtedly involve a complicated and most-importantly, expensive production process. Chinese manufacturer Oppo might have found a better way to create a true edge-to edge display experience, as evident by a new patent, sent to us by an anonymous tipster. From what we managed to make out from the description, the new technology involves covering a traditional rectangular display module with what the company calls a panel with "special light guide structure". Now, just to be clear, this does not translate to a bezelless screen, but rather to one with a very slimmed-down side bezels. The included schematic further clarifies this. It appears a special curve at the end of the said transparent overlay diffracts light from the panel in such a way, that it is essentially projected on it, extending beyond the actual display unit. This allows for the bezel of the display module to remain hidden, making it essentially invisible, without having to alter current manufacturing processes. This could be the key to a future display revolution, as such a technology could allow manufacturers to bring that trendy, awe-inspiring edge-to-edge screen experience on a budget, with a more or less traditional display unit under the hood. Now, the chart does not detail how much extra screen real estate it is going to deliver and whether or not there will be some magnification or distortion of the image nor does it explain how scalable this new technology is and what its limitations are, but it certainly gives us a peek behind the curtains of Oppo's R&D labs. The patent has already been filed on December 19 2014 in China and the documentation we're referring to should be available online within three to six months, depending on how the process goes, so we can expect Oppo to take advantage of the patent after...

The Top 10 trending phones of week 12
3/22/2015 9:08:52 AM
For yet another week, the top trending phones chart has been dominated by Samsung and, more specifically, the company's latest flagship device - the Galaxy S6. The handset has been generating so much attention after its announcement at MWC 2015, that it is dwarfing its contenders in the list with a huge lead of about 40,000 daily hits. Interestingly enough, the remainder of the top three section of the list, has also remained unchanged. The top of the line S6 is followed closely by the premium metal-body Galaxy A7 and the A5. Even the Galaxy Grand prime has managed to hold the forth place it had last week, so Samsung is definitely on a roll lately. There are, however, some interesting rearrangements in the rest of the list. The Galaxy S5 has moved up a place to number 5, coming just ahead of the Asus Zenfone 5. The spike in interest with the Zenfone is much more impressive, though and the phone has skipped from 10th place, all the way to number 6. Interestingly enough, the HTC One M9 interest plummeted down and it's now inching towards the bottom of the chart at number 8. Perhaps, this is due to the recent overheating controversy it was involved in, so HTC has some damage control on its hands to get the flagship back on the road to success. .news-item .n-left { float: left; width: 26%; text-align: center; } .news-item .n-right { float: left; width: 74%; } .news-item a { padding-bottom: 0; padding-left: 0; } .news-item .n-right h2, .reviews-item .n-right h2 { clear: both; padding: 0 0 3px 0px; font: 400 19px Oswald, Arial; margin-top: -4px; } .n-right p { margin-top: 25px; line-height: 155%; } .news-item { padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; border-top: 1px solid #ccc; } .news-item p { margin-left: 0; } .n-right h2 .phone-name { display: inline-block; width: 252px; overflow: hidden; vertical-align: text-bottom; } .n-right h2 a { text-decoration: none; color: #000; } .flat-button{ text-align:center; text-decoration: none !important; font: 400 22px Oswald,Arial !important; //font-family: sans-serif; -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; font-size: 150%; //background: #0CADA7; padding: 20px 60px !important; display: inline-block; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-border-radius: 5px; -moz-border-radius: 5px; border-radius: 5px; margin: 10px 0; -webkit-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -ms-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -moz-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -o-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; color: #fff !important; } .flat-button-1 { background: #0CADA7; } .flat-button-1:hover { background: #0A948F; color: #666666 !important; } .flat-button-2 { background: #FF7E47; } .flat-button-2:hover { background: #EE7440; color: #666666 !important; } .n-right .rank-info { display: inline-block; font-family: "Oswald",Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: 100; } .n-right .rank-info .current-rank { font-size: 23px; } .circle { background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #8fb28f; border-radius: 50%; height: 23px; width: 23px; display: inline-block; margin: 0px 10px -1px 10px; } .arrow { width: 0; height: 0; border-style: solid; display: inline-block; margin: 0px 10px -1px 10px; } .arrow-up { border-width: 0 15px 25px 15px; border-color: transparent transparent #0cada7 transparent; } .arrow-down { border-width: 25px 15px 0 15px; border-color: #ff7e47 transparent transparent transparent; } Samsung Galaxy S6 RANK: 1WAS: 1 specs review Samsung Galaxy A7 RANK: 2WAS: 2 specs review Samsung Galaxy A5 RANK: 3WAS: 3 specs review Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime RANK: 4WAS: 4 specs review Samsung Galaxy S5 RANK: 5WAS: 6 specs review Asus Zenfone 5 RANK: 6WAS: 10 specs review Apple iPhone 6 RANK: 7WAS: 8 specs review HTC One M9 RANK: 8WAS: 5 specs...

LG India confirms Android 5.0 Lollipop for G2 in Q2
3/22/2015 7:34:58 AM
LG rolled out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the G2 smartphone in South Korea back in mid-January. After a long wait, the Indian owners of G2 finally get a word on Lollipop update - to expect it in Q2 of 2015. @i_Gujju Hi, the Lollipop update for #LGG2 is expected in Q2' 2015. Stay tuned!— LG India (@LGIndiaTweets) March 19, 2015 LG India's Twitter account revealed that the G2 owners will get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update in the second quarter of 2015 - between April and June. This will be a major update from the current KitKat and hence we recommend to backup your data, perform a factory reset and then download the Lollipop update over a Wi-Fi connection. LG had released the Lollipop update for the G3 in India but the performance of the update is not that exemplary. Quite possible that the Android 5.0's memory leak bug is causing that and is expected to be fixed with the Android 5.1 Lollipop...

Week 12 in review: Xperia Z4 rumors and Lollipop updates
3/22/2015 5:47:50 AM
Another week has passed and, naturally, it's time to look back and see what excited the mobile world during the past seven days. It seems MWC 2015 had something to offer most every fan out there. Samsung introduced the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, HTC showcased the new One M9, but there is still a certain manufacturer that seemed to miss the venue almost completely, leaving fans wanting. Sony, did not manage to bring the eagerly-anticipated Xperia Z4 to Barcelona and fans are really getting impatient. Naturally, this has resulted in a tidal wave of rumors about the upcoming handset. We have seen renders, alleged specs and even a few images slip through the cracks. This is elevating hype even more, which will hopefully turn out to be in Sony's best interest once the phone finally sees the light of day. The Android scene, as a whole has been very active during the week. Most manufacturers are still knee deep in the Lollipop update frenzy and we are constantly hearing news of various flagships and even some popular midrangers, like the LG L90, getting an Android OTA. In other news, a few new devices surfaced during the week. Rumors are hinting at a new Sony camera-centric phone, as well as a lager HTC One M9, dubbed the M9+.
