RootMetrics assesses carrier performance in airports
3/23/2015 11:35:00 PM

As the competition over actual physical coverage between Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile intensifies (Sprint's physical expansion is just getting underway), the focus is going to shift more and more toward network performance.

Each of the carriers have their respective strengths in this regard. Verizon is widely regarded as the reigning champion and AT&T is not far behind. However, T-Mobile is capitalizing on acquisitions and the abandoned AT&T merger goodies, and that has made Team Magenta a serious player in coverage and performance.

That reality has become apparent in airports ...

Report: AT&T's Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to receive new version of Android 5.0
3/23/2015 10:40:00 PM

A new version of Android 5.0, first rolled out by Samsung in the Netherlands, is slated to be used for AT&T's Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update according to a new report. This version of Android 5.0 removes the criticized "Interruptions" system that replaced the "Mute" mode. While the former is not a part of the new Android 5.0 build, neither is the latter. In order to mute an updated phone, the "Sound" setting needs to be changed in the Quick Settings menu, not through the volume slider.

In the U.S., only the Sprint branded version of the Galaxy Note 4 has been Lollipopped so far ...

Passcode? What passcode? Software can brute force its way on jailbroken iOS devices
3/23/2015 10:11:00 PM

Jailbreaking an iOS device unleashes a lot of great potential for those that want more from their iPhone. It is akin to taking the leash off and removing the fence, it opens a world of possibilities.

Of course, that also potentially opens the world to your device as well. Recently some folks assembled some hardware, literally a little black box, that could brute-force its way through the PIN lock on an iPhone, jailbroken or not, running iOS 8.1 or later. The trick was that it could cut power to the device before it could log the failed attempt, thus not triggering the passcode counter.

Now, ...

Wearables headed for high-fashion in Japan
3/23/2015 8:41:00 PM

Smart wearable technology is still relatively young, so that means there are is not a single all-awesome solution out there for everyone. Function, battery life, and fashion all live divergent realities right now.

If you want higher levels of function and strong battery life, that generally means fashion goes by the wayside. Fashion along with function usually comes at the expense of battery performance. Replacing function with battery life and keeping the fashion means the accessory will not have the depth or breadth of Android Wear or the Apple Watch.

In Japan, several college students ...

Can Cyanogen's McMaster build the "Google-less" Android he is aiming for?
3/23/2015 7:13:00 PM

Now that Cyanogen has received $80 million in funding from big name outfits like Twitter Ventures, Qualcomm, Telefónica Ventures, Rupert Murdoch, CEO Kirt McMaster can continue to work on his dream of "a Google-less Android." The money will be used to hire the people and fund the R&D needed for McMaster to reach his goal.

Perhaps it seems subtle from the first paragraph, but it really isn't. McMaster is not happy with Google's hold over the open source operating system and says "We're putting a bullet through Google's head." Normally a comment like thas might be easily dismissed, but ...

Ebola-proof tablet devised by Google
3/23/2015 4:50:00 PM

Collecting data in areas hit hard by the Ebola virus requires a tablet that is protected against contamination. So Doctors Without Borders requested that Google build them a tablet that would be Ebola-proof. Based on a Sony Xperia tablet, Google housed the device in a special casing to make sure that the slate could withstand the high humidity and storms that occur in West Africa.

Additionally, an extra level of protection around the tablet allows it to be dipped in chlorine to kill off any remnants of the Ebola virus. Sharp edges have been rounded off to make sure that the slate doesn't ...

Microsoft Lumia 640 is "coming soon" to T-Mobile
3/23/2015 3:52:00 PM

T-Mobile is getting ready to launch the Lumia 640, one of the two mid-range smartphones that Microsoft announced earlier this month at MWC 2015. The carrier is currently listing the Lumia 640 (LTE variant) on its official website, though for now it can only tell us that the handset is "coming soon."

Microsoft already revealed that the Lumia 640 LTE would cost around $160, and that's how much T-Mobile will probably ask for the handset (if not less). While it's going to run Windows Phone 8.1 at launch, the 640 will be updated to Windows 10 sometime later this year (just like its bigger brother, ...

3/23/2015 3:41:00 PM

Meizu has been building some kick-ass Android models with its flagship Meizu MX4 topping the list of high scorers on the AnTuTu Benchmark site for all of last year. The Meizu MX4 Pro takes the MX4 to a slightly higher level, specs wise. Owners of these handsets are curious about when they will receive the Android 5.0 update. We might have the answer.

A chart found on Chinese social media site Weibo reveals a roadmap allegedly showing when Meizu plans on sending Android 5.0 out to various models. The chart isn't the easiest thing in the world to understand, but we can come to some conclusions.

According ...
